The millet mosaic satellite virus ( scientifically Panicum mosaic satellite virus , SPMV ) is a plant satellite virus from the species Panicum papanivirus 1 , genus Papanivirus . It only infects grasses that are infected with the millet mosaic virus ( Panicum mosaic virus , PMV, family Tombusviridae , genus Panicovirus ). One study found that 72% of the Stenotaphrum secundatum species infected with the millet mosaic virus ( English St. Augustine grass , Australian. En. Buffalo turf , Panicoideae , Tribus Paniceae) were also infected with SPMV. In addition to the SPMV, many plants infected with the millet mosaic virus are infected with satellite RNAs.

Effects

PMV and SPMV can also spread through millet ( Setaria italica ), blue millet (real millet, Panicum miliaceum ) or pearl millet ( Pennisetum glaucum ), mechanical transmission can take place on maize ( Zea mays ) and common wheat ( Triticum aestivum ).

The satellite virus, when combined with PMV, causes symptoms to appear earlier in the growing season and makes the infection more severe. Without PMV, SPMV is unable to replicate in the host cell , it is completely dependent on PMV.

The effects of PMV on millet without its satellite virus are mild chlorosis and mild short stature . The synergistic effect of PMV with the satellite virus consists in streaks of chlorosis that develop rapidly within a few days of infection. The long-term effects of a combined infection are severe tessellated leaf discoloration, dwarfism, and lack of seed formation.
