The Historical Association of the Canton of Glarus is a history association that deals with the history of the Canton of Glarus . It was founded in Glarus in 1863 . The initiator and first president was the legal historian Johann Jakob Blumer .

The goals of the association include the promotion of "patriotic history", the publication of a yearbook to compile a complete collection of all still existing documents pertaining to the canton, the collection of "antiquities" and the organization of "popular lectures on patriotic history".

founding

Joachim Heer, later Federal Councilor

In 1863, the cantonal non-profit society invited "all history friends of the Canton of Glarus" on October 19 to found the Historical Association of the Canton of Glarus. 38 citizens of the canton accepted this invitation and constituted the association. Johann Jakob Blumer was elected as the first president, Josua Staub as actuary , Chr. Tschudi as quaestor and Joachim Heer and Johann Heinrich Heer as members of the board. Blumer cited the fire in Glarus in 1861 as the cause of the establishment , in which various historical documents were destroyed.

Since it was founded, the historical association has published articles on Glarus history in its yearbook. The yearbook not only provides information about the interests of the association, it also contains reports from the state archive, the cantonal monument preservation department, the Museum of the State of Glarus and the other museums and history associations in the canton. A series of lectures takes place every winter. Members and other interested parties have the opportunity to find out about the latest research in the area of Glarus, Swiss and world history.

The association also initiates, promotes or supports publications and events related to the Glarus region and its past: In 2013, the association celebrated its 150th anniversary with an assessment of the Glarus historical research (Yearbook of the Historical Association No. 93). In 2014 he organized an international conference on worker protection in the 19th century as well as a vernissage for a newly published book about the Glarus homosexual pioneer Heinrich Hössli . Thirteen years earlier the association wanted to know nothing about a book by Pirmin Meier on the same subject “out of consideration for the majority of the members”.
