Historical handbook of the Jewish communities in Westphalia and Lippe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Historical Handbook of the Jewish Communities in Westphalia and Lippe is a handbook in four volumes with a total of 2,890 printed pages. It consists of a basic volume and three regional volumes that were published between 2008 and 2016 by Ardey Verlag in Münster . Registers and supplements appear in digital form.

The manual was initiated in 2000 by Karl Hengst . In spring 2001 the Historical Commission for Westphalia decided to include the manual in its work program. A cooperation with the Institute for Comparative Urban History was agreed for implementation. The editors of the four volumes are Susanne Freund, Frank Göttmann , Karl Hengst, Franz-Josef Jakobi, Peter Johanek and Ursula Olschewski, the editors were Burkhard Beyer, Anna-Therese Grabkowsky, Franz-Josef Jakobi, Bernd-Wilhelm Linnemeier, Wilfried Reininghaus and Rita Schlautmann-Overmeyer.

The three regional volumes are based on the boundaries of today's administrative districts of Arnsberg, Detmold and Münster. Every Jewish community or congregation that had either a prayer room or a cemetery at least temporarily is taken into account. This also covers communities that only existed for a few decades and never achieved the status of a community. The regional volumes contain a total of 270 local articles, which are preceded by contributions on the history of the Jews in the individual territories before 1803. The basic volume summarizes the history of the Jews in Westphalia and Lippe from their beginnings to the present across territories. 151 authors contributed to the four volumes of the manual. 142 wrote the local articles, 21 the review articles, six acted as editors and six as editors; many took on multiple tasks.
