The Church of St. George the Great Martyr in Mojković

The Church of St. George the Great Martyr ( Serbian : Црква Светог великомученика Георгија, Crkva Svetog velikomučenika Georgija) is a church in the village of Mojković in western Serbia .

The St. The parish church consecrated to Great Martyr Georg belongs to the Mojković parish in the Rađevina deanery of the Šabac eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Mojković belongs to the Opština Krupanj (municipality Krupanj) in Okrug Mačva (administrative district Mačva) of western central Serbia . According to the 2011 census, a total of 682 people lived in the village. Serbs make up the local population .

The newly built rectory

The church is in the center of Mojković's village. In the cemetery stand next to the church a newly built rectory , a cross and old grave monuments.

The Mojković parish consists of the following villages: Mojković, Ravnaja , Brezovice and part of the village of Zavlaka . All villages belong to the Opština Krupanj . The current parish priest (2018) is Archpriest Slobodan Krstić .

history

The building of the church, which began in May 1935, was completed in 1936 and inaugurated on October 25, 1936 by the bishop of the then eparchy Šabac - Valjevo Simeon (Stanković).

The bones of the fallen soldiers of the Morava division of the Serbian army rest in the crypt below the altar . Siw were victims of the Battle of the Jadar River in 1914 in the early stages of the First World War . The bones were recovered from around 340 elevations (hills) on the battlefield and transferred to the church.

The plan of the church is a Greek cross . It was built in the Byzantine style . A round dome rises above the middle of the nave , at the intersection of the side arms. Entrances to the church are on the west, north and south sides. In the east the church has an altar - apse . From the outside it is kept relatively simple.

Inside the church is currently (2018) painted with artistically valuable Byzantine frescoes . It also has a (wooden) iconostasis with icons , which is typical for Orthodox church buildings .
