Today's Church of the Guardian Angel

The Church of the Holy Guardian Angel is the Catholic parish church in Hambühren , a municipality in the district of Celle in Lower Saxony . It is the youngest church in the deanery of Celle and the only church in the diocese of Hildesheim that is named after the guardian angels . The church has the status of a parish church and is located at Eichendorffstraße 11.

history

At the end of 1950, around 800 expellees , mostly from Silesia , came to Hambühren from the dissolved refugee reception center in Reinsehlen ( district of Soltau ). The Catholic camp pastor from Reinsehlen, Pastor Hoenke, and three sisters from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elisabeth came with me to Hambühren. The expellees settled on the area of the former air ammunition facility 1 / XI, which was built in 1939 . The town of "Hambühren II" was created by converting the bunkers and warehouses of the former ammunition plant into residential buildings.

In 1950/51 the Catholic emergency church for the Holy Guardian Angel was established in a building that was built around 1940 as a warehouse for the ammunition plant (MUNA building 113, Kirchstrasse 9/11). On 2/3 December 1951 was their benediction by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens . Her three bells came from the Hamburg bell cemetery . In the neighboring building 114, also a former warehouse of the munitions plant, an evangelical church (Church of the Resurrection) was inaugurated on October 30, 1950, which still exists today and has since been declared a historical monument. On April 1, 1960, the establishment of the Catholic parish Hambühren took place.

In 1984/85 the parish Hl. Guardian Angel got the church Hl. Kreuz in Winsen , built in 1971 , which previously belonged to the parish Maria Hilfe der Christisten in Wietze , as a branch church . On December 1, 1985 the parish Hambühren was raised to a parish.

In the late summer of 1986 the foundation stone was laid for today's church on Eichendorffstrasse, and on December 5, 1987, it was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Pachowiak . The old church building on Kirchstrasse was rebuilt and is now used for profane purposes (hairdressing salon and nursing home). In 1993 the new church was enriched with a free-standing tower with new bells.

On November 1, 2006, the parish of the Holy Guardian Angel also received the Church of Mary Help of Christians in Wietze as a further branch church; their parish, to which about 640 Catholics belonged at the time, was abolished in this context. This increased the number of parishioners to almost 2900.

Architecture and equipment

The church is almost 38 meters above sea level . Hanns Joachim Klug created the altar , tabernacle , baptismal font , ambo and altarpiece.

The St. Raphael daycare center belongs to the parish. From 1950 onwards it was initially located on the ground floor of the nurses' station (Eichendorffstraße 36), which existed until 1967, and moved to the side rooms of the church in 1951. It has been at its current location since 1999 (Eichendorffstrasse 9) and was expanded in 2010 by two more rooms in the neighboring parish center.
