Hobhouse is a place in the South African province of Free State . It is located in the municipality Mantsopa Local Municipality in the district Thabo Mofutsanyana .
geography
2011 Hobhouse had 244 inhabitants, the northern township Dipelaneng had 3736 inhabitants. The place is a few kilometers north of the Caledon , which forms the border with Lesotho here. After Wepener in the southwest there are around 32 kilometers of Ladybrand in the northeast around 50 kilometers.
history
The place was established in 1912 on the site of the Poortjie Farm . It was named after Emily Hobhouse (1860-1926), who, as a British woman, had campaigned for Boer women and children during and after the Second Boer War . The place received municipal status in 1913.
Economy and Transport
The main line of business is agriculture with the cultivation of corn and wheat as well as animal husbandry and cheese production.
Hobhouse is on the R26 between Wepener and Ladybrand. The R709 leads northwest towards Tweespruit . There is no direct connection to Lesotho from Hobhouse.
