St. John's Lutheran Church
German-speaking Evangelical Lutheran immigrants gathered on March 27, 1912 for a first Lutheran service in the Methodist Church in Hobson. The Lutheran congregation was formally formed on February 12, 1915 and joined the Missouri Synod on June 20, 1915 . In 1916 construction began on its own church, which was consecrated as St. John's Lutheran Church on January 28, 1917. Until 1932 the church registers were written in German. After 1961, the pastorate in Hobson was vacant, and the shrinking number of members of the congregation kept it unattended. In 1971 the church was finally closed.
In 1973 parts of the film The Last Bite the Dogs with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges were filmed in Hobson . The opening scene of the film took place at St. John's Lutheran Church with parishioners as extras performing the chorale Hallelujah! What a Savior! to sing. The abandoned church was laid down in 1981 with a plan to rebuild it in the village of Troy, Montana for a newly formed Lutheran congregation. This did not happen, however, and parts of the church were only built into wooden houses in Glacier Park . The church was named Spirit Lake Idaho Community Church in the movie .
