Bunker Friedrich-Karl-Strasse

The high bunker Friedrich-Karl-Straße is a three-story high bunker of the type M 500 in Berlin-Tempelhof , which was built as a civilian air raid shelter during the Second World War . After the end of the war, the bunker was used as a storage room; after a renovation, musicians could rent rehearsal rooms in it until April 2019 . The bunker is a listed building .

Position and design

The bunker is almost exactly in the middle of the block, which is formed by Burgemeisterstraße in the north, Werderstraße in the east, Friedrich-Karl-Straße in the south and Friedrich-Franz-Straße in the west. The postal address is Friedrich-Karl-Straße 24. Not far from the bunker at the eastern end of Friedrich-Karl-Straße is the Tempelhof harbor .

The bunker has three floors and a rectangular floor plan of approx. 15 × 32 m, which is aligned along the north-south direction. Under the pronounced hipped roof there is a walk-in attic. The building is almost 18 meters high from the ground to the top of the roof, the eaves height is a good 10 meters. The wall thickness decreases continuously from the ground floor to the roof, whereby the inner walls are in vertical alignment and the outer walls are sloped at 2.75 °. The facades are plastered and designed with loopholes-shaped ventilation and a circumferential console frieze, which forms the transition to the roof beams.

On the narrow sides facing Friedrich-Karl-Straße and Burgemeisterstraße are the two arched entrances, the borders of which are made of artificial stone . A stairwell and two long corridors that open up the building can be reached through an anteroom behind the entrances. Small rooms lead off the corridors to the left and right, separated from each other by non-load-bearing walls.

history

After the first air raids by the Royal Air Force on Berlin on August 25, 1940, the leadership of the German Reich decided in September 1940 on the bunker building program for the Reich capital as part of the immediate Führer program . The Langer construction group of the General Building Inspector , an authority headed by Speer , developed various types of standard bunkers for Berlin. The bunker on Friedrich-Karl-Straße is an example of the M 500 bunker , named after the capacity of 500 people. In Berlin, in addition to the Tempelhof bunker, four other identical bunkers of the type M 500 have been preserved, all of which are also under monument protection: the bunker of the pioneer barracks in Karlshorst , the bunker of the barracks of Flak Regiment 12 in Lankwitz and two neighboring bunkers in Wittenauer Strasse in Wittenau .

The bunker was designed as a so-called sleeping bunker, the small 2 × 3 m chambers were each intended to serve one family. The antiqued designs were intended to enhance the building and create the impression of an "impregnable bulwark". This relatively elaborate design is typical for the bunkers built in the so-called immediate Führer program from October 1940. Plaster and stone elements were dispensed with in later air raid shelters.

After the purchase of the property (with the bunker) in 2003 by Metropolis International Holding AG, the 2717 m² property was divided and a city villa was built on the part facing the street. The rest of the property with the listed bunker was rebuilt between 2004 and 2008 to a total of around 50 music rehearsal rooms. For this purpose, the former bedrooms were enlarged, walls torn out, heating and toilets installed and other modifications made. The name Musikbunker was registered as a trademark for Metropolis International Holding AG. The bunker was sold by Metropolis AG in 2008. There, musicians could rehearse around the clock without any noise complaints from the residents. In April 2019, however, the owner of the bunker decided to no longer make the rehearsal rooms available due to a lack of fire protection.
