Hochschulring German Kayaker Kiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hochschulring Deutscher Kajakfahrer Kiel eV , HDK Kiel eV for short , is a canoe club with around 80 members (as of 2017), which consists mainly of students , alumni , lecturers and members of the Kiel universities. The HDK is a registered association (eV).

particularities

The HDK Kiel e. V. and its members deal intensively with the history of canoeing, kayaking and its arctic inventors, the Inuits . An extensive library on these topics is maintained. Special attention is also paid to traditional techniques of kayaking, such as eskimo paddling with traditional Greenland paddles.

Modern kayaks, but especially traditional boats such as Greenland kayaks and baidarkas and paddles (especially Greenland paddles) made in skin-on-frame construction , are manufactured by the members privately or in workshops .

For geographic reasons , the main sporting focus is on sea kayaking , the main area of the HDK is the Kiel Fjord .

history

Foundation and early days

The HDK owes its existence to an idea by the student Walter Frentz , who studied at the Technical University of Munich in the late 1920s . Its vision was that students who - as was common at the time - often had to change their place of study, could still organize themselves in a sports community at the university without always having to change clubs. So the HDK was founded on December 18, 1928. At the respective universities, the working groups formed so-called rings, which were organized under the umbrella of the HDK.

The idea caught on, and after just a few years there were rings of the HDK at 25 German universities , and the number of members rose to several hundred students. The concept also found friends in other European countries, for example in 1936 at the University of London Canoe Club.

At that time, the HDK always paid great attention to safe boat control even under difficult conditions (white water, open sea, etc.); so were z. For example, the members Franz von Alber ( traveling through the Salzachöfen in Eskimo kayaks), Klaus and Arndt von Rautenfeld (coastal trips in South America) were true masters in the technique of Eskimo fishing, which was not very widespread at the time, and did pioneering work in this area. In particular, the members Walter Frentz and Herbert Rittlinger , who sailed numerous rivers and whitewater all over Europe, repeatedly published documentaries and specialist publications on the subject of canoeing and could also be seen in various films with paddling scenes.

Another early achievement of the HDK was the introduction of the kayak slalom in Germany (now an Olympic discipline ), and university championships were also held.

The time of National Socialism

The conformity of Prussia , the National Socialist policy from 1933, the registration of students by NSDAP organizations, labor service , military sports and conscription led to a massive decline in membership in many sports clubs. At the HDK this was so serious that only the Kieler Ring survived the Second World War .

Under British occupation and re-establishment

Under the British military government, bans on water vehicles were issued, the Allied Control Council issued a ban on activities for many associations ( Control Council Act No. 8) and dissolved this on January 1, 1946. After the shipping order No. 2 and the announcement of the formation of sailing sports clubs in November 1946, however, opportunities to practice water sports were again created, eleven Kiel members of the HDK tried to get a new license. This was achieved through cooperation with the Kieler Yacht Club (KYC), so that from December 2, 1946, club operations could be resumed - at least to a limited extent. At first only the Kiel Fjord up to the border line between Laboe and Bülk could be used).

In 1947, the HDK Kiel was among the founding members of the Landeskanuverband (LKV) Schleswig-Holstein.

From January 1948 the freedom of association was reintroduced, which led to a significant easing of the situation of the HDK. Even before the war, the club did not have its own boathouse, so from 1954 it was housed in the Seeburg of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

The HDK today

Today the HDK consists mainly of members and lecturers from Kiel universities, students and alumni.

It is still housed in the historic Kieler Seeburg on the Kiellinie in the immediate vicinity of the Kiel Fjord.

The sporting focus is not on competitive sports, but rather on coastal canoeing, sea kayaking on the open sea and traditional Greenlandic rolling and paddling techniques.

The construction of seaworthy, traditional boats and paddles is still very active - for example, R. Cooijmans made a name for himself with the construction of a number of skin-on-frame boats and traditional Greenland paddles, which are recognized throughout Germany.

Under the flag of the HDK, waters in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Turkey, Austria, France, Tierra del Fuego, Canada, the USA, Hawaii, Greenland, New Zealand and Svalbard were sailed.
