The high street Lenneberg is a 949 meter long, four-lane total highway bridge the A643 .

The bridge between the Mainzer Sand nature reserve and the Schiersteiner Bridge consists of 31 fields that span the Mombacher Oberfeld and Unterfeld. The elevated road was built between 1962 and 1964 as a federal highway without hard shoulder . The Mombach junction is one of the few junctions in Germany that is on a bridge. At the same time, the junction is also the direct transition to the Schiersteiner Bridge.

Until the beginning of March 2008, the speed limit on the bridge was 100 km / h. Structural damage to the neighboring Schiersteiner Bridge resulted in the maximum speed being reduced to 80 km / h in the direction of Wiesbaden. From the Mombach junction in the direction of Gonsenheim, the limit is 100 km / h. This regulation will probably continue to exist until new successor structures are built.

Bridge course

The bridge was originally built for a federal road leading over it, so that there are only very short acceleration and deceleration lanes at the junction in question . However, several lighting systems were installed to illuminate the connection point. For cost reasons, however, these remain dark today. There are also two traffic control systems at AS Mombach , but these have also been out of service (around the end of the 1980s).

Furthermore, the bridge has no hard shoulder, which inevitably leads to traffic jams in the event of a traffic accident or car breakdown , as around 80,000 vehicles drive over the bridge every day.

Blocking the bridge

The Lenneberg high street and the Schiersteiner Bridge were closed on February 10, 2015 at around 10:00 p.m. after significant safety deficiencies were discovered. Due to a sloping pillar and a steel bearing that has jumped out, the roadway has sunk about 30 cm. This caused cracks in the bridge. As a result of the closure, there was traffic chaos in the entire Mainz / Wiesbaden region. On February 16, 2015, the bridge between the Gonsenheim and Mombach junctions was reopened to traffic in both directions, in the direction of Wiesbaden, so that at least truck traffic to the industrial area in Mombach and Neustadt would no longer have to pass through downtown Mainz . For this purpose, the exit from Gonsenheim was also re-marked as the driveway and the maximum speed allowed was reduced to 40 km / h in both directions in order to be able to direct the traffic as far as possible from the affected area onto the elevated road. The regular driveway from Mombach to Gonsenheim has been in operation again since April 12, 2015. Only the departure from Wiesbaden to Mombach is still closed. Road users have to turn in the newly built roundabout at the Gonsenheim junction to get to Mombach.

Planned new building

According to the current state of planning, a new three-lane bridge down the Rhine is to be built parallel to the existing Schiersteiner Bridge and Hochstraße Lenneberg, so that the two junctions Äppelallee and Gonsenheim should each form the starting point. The AS Mombach is also connected. Only after the completion of the new bridge will the old Schiersteiner bridge be demolished down to the supporting pillars. The supporting pillars will then support another three-lane motorway bridge.

Nature conservation associations suggested tunnelling the motorway at the level of the Mainz Sand nature reserve , which enjoys the highest level of protection at European level because it is designated as an FFH and an EU bird sanctuary . The motorway has divided the intact area in two. This variant was discarded in 2011.

The Mombacher Rheinufer nature reserve will also be affected by the possible construction measures. The meadows there serve as important food biotopes for the white storks in the region.
