The Marzahn Wedding Park is a two-hectare green space opened in the summer of 2007 in the Marzahn district of Berlin in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district , which is filled with young trees twice a year. The park was laid out in several construction phases and is located between Ludwig-Renn- and Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße with access to Alfred-Döblin-Straße.

history

After the demolition of two prefabricated standard schools from GDR times in the 1990s, including a former school garden, an area of around 12,000 square meters lay fallow for a long time . A completely new park was created as a comprehensive joint project of the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development , the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office, the Local Agenda 21 , the Agrarbörse Deutschland Ost e. V, the district management of Mehrower Allee, the residents and businesses. A new system of paths, including existing trees, was created along the surrounding streets and suitable plants were selected. On November 3, 2007, everyone involved opened the green area with the public planting of the first 49 new trees. In 2010 another 32 trees were added. At the same time as the park was inaugurated, the local district office had an artistically designed, publicly accessible metal pavilion (“The Covered Table”) built with a long wooden table and wooden benches on both sides.

All designs for the park including the pergola come from the landscape architect Gabriele Wilheim-Stemberger, who works in the nature and environment office of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office. The architect has already successfully designed other places in Berlin such as Alice-Herz-Platz and Regine-Hildebrandt-Park .

On April 26, 2014, the district office planted more Swedish whitebeams and crabapple trees at the spring planting festival . The wedding park thus had 198 trees at that time. They are planted symmetrically on either side of three main paths.

Access to the park was further improved in 2015 through renovation work, and the work was financed from the Socially Integrative City program .

Young trees were last planted in spring 2016. It was considered necessary to stop planting in order not to put the trees too densely. Without further expansion there will be no more new plantings.

use

Wedding park

For special occasions such as births , weddings , baptisms , school graduation or company anniversaries, anyone interested could choose a tree from a given list of 16 different tree species . The trees - including oaks, cherries, linden, but also mountain ash, maple, elm, apple, pear, Swedish whitebeam - had to correspond to the site conditions and the climate and should also harmonize together. The selected trees were planted twice a year, always on the first Saturday in November and on the last Saturday in April, as part of a public planting festival. Planting a tree cost between 75 and 100 euros. The tree sponsor received a "tree certificate" with a map of the park and tree number. Interested parties were able to obtain an information folder from citizens' offices and other municipal institutions or obtain information and register on the specially set up homepage. The pavilion and table in the middle of the park are also available to residents for leisure activities. The district environmental agency takes care of the trees and the park on a regular basis. The park is an open recreational facility, in which, for example, kite festivals have already taken place.

The wedding park is located east of the Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße S-Bahn station . Since 2013, it has also had a barrier-free meeting point with tables and benches to celebrate. To the north-east it could be expanded over time and then also include the rose garden and further meadows around a former pond (for several years a rain overflow area). The park is part of the Hönower hiking trail and this in turn is part of the 20 main green paths in and around Berlin project funded by the Berlin Senate .

In the neighborhood are the Marzahn Bürgergarten , a sports field and the “Garden of Encounters”. The areas are connected with footpaths and are called "rays of the little star".
