Jacobus-Willem "Co" Hoedeman (born August 1, 1940 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch animator who has lived and worked in Canada since 1965.

Life

Hoedeman dropped out of school when he was 15 and started making a living as a photo retoucher for a printing company. He turned to film work and learned the basics of filmmaking in various small companies, such as working as an animation assistant at Multifilm, which later became the Cinecentrum. At the same time, he attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and the School of Photography in The Hague and at the age of 25, Hoedeman went to Canada in 1965 and was employed as a production assistant on the National Film Board of Canada . He made his film debut in 1967 with the educational film Continental Drift , followed by the first short film in the French-speaking section of the NFB in 1969, Oddball , a film with wire puppets .

In 1970 Hoedemann went to Czechoslovakia for four months , where he studied puppet animation. Back in Canada, he was inspired by the art of the Iqaluit and Puvirnituq to create a series of short animated films entitled An Eskimo Legend , which deal with Inuit legends . For this he worked closely with Inuit artists. His greatest success was the stop-motion short film Le château de sable in 1978 , for which Hoedeman won an Oscar . In addition to stop motion, Hoedeman also worked with cut-outs, computer animation and 3D models, including wooden dolls ( matrioska ), in his films . In Tchou-Tchou from 1972, however, only colorful wooden blocks were animated. From 1998 to 2004 four animated films were made for children around Teddy Ludovic , in German Benedikt , and his stuffed toy friends. Ludovic deals with emotions that are new to him, such as grief and remorse.

In addition to directing his own films, Hoedeman also worked several times with other filmmakers. He was the cameraman for the Oscar-nominated stop-motion film Monsieur Pointu (1975) and worked as an animator on Une histoire comme une autre by Paul Driessen . The 1980 documentary Co Hoedeman, animateur is dedicated to Hoedeman's work.

Hoedeman's films have an educational character and put humanistic values in the foreground: “Environmental protection, social inclusion, respect for diversity, peace” “With his comparatively simple and magical stories, Hoedeman aims to direct the adult viewer back to the 'garden of our childhood' “Says Animation Now! In a meeting, the NFB called him an “animation magician”.
