The Hof pharmacy in Stuttgart is one of the oldest pharmacies in Germany. It was founded in 1551 by Margravine Anna Maria von Brandenburg , the wife of Duke Christoph , as a foundation for the poor, sick and needy in the city. Later the royal orphanage was also supplied by the pharmacy. In its early days, the pharmacy was located in the rooms of the old castle .

timeline

The history of the Hof-Apotheke began over 600 years ago in 1413, in a side wing of the Old Castle in a non-public medicine chamber under the direction of the "honorable and prudent" master Heinrich Glatz. He was in charge of the “medicine chamber” as a “secondary office” and at the same time had a public pharmacy in the city of Stuttgart. Medicines were only allowed to be given to Count Eberhard IV of Württemberg and his wife Henriette von Mömpelgard , the court and the chancellery (royal office).

Almost 150 years later in 1551, the pharmacy of Margravine Anna Maria von Brandenburg-Ansbach , the wife of Duke Christoph of Württemberg (Württemberg had been elevated to a duchy since 1495) was brought into being as a foundation, "um" - as it was in the Foundation documents means - "to provide the sick with medicines". It was a foundation for the poor, sick and needy of the city under the direction of Cyriakus Horn III. Later u. a. supplied the royal orphanage with free medicines.

In addition to Anna Maria von Brandenburg, other women also played a role in the history of the Hof-Apotheke. In 1582 Helene Ruckher was appointed court pharmacist, at that time women were rare in this profession. Helene Ruckher managed the pharmacy for 12 years until she retired. She was followed by other pharmacists, but most of them were in the duchess's entourage, so they stayed with her in the castle in Nürtingen and not in the court pharmacy in Stuttgart. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was Maria Andreae who helped the farm pharmacy gain a good reputation.

At the end of the 18th century, the Hof-Apotheke moved from the side wing of the Old Castle into the rooms of the sickroom wing in the High Charles School , the first university in the city of Stuttgart.

In 1820 the farm pharmacy moved into the castle chapel in the old castle, which was specially converted for this purpose by order of Duke Christoph

In 1865, at the behest of King Wilhelm I , the farm pharmacy was relocated to the old chancellery at Schillerplatz 5 in Stuttgart. The old chancellery was the count's office, later the seat of the Württemberg administrative authority.

1910–1955 Karl Fuchs was the owner of the farm pharmacy. He was the first tenant of the now self-administered farm pharmacy. Fuchs received the title of Hofrat in 1918 from King Wilhelm II of Württemberg for his meritorious work. After the dissolution of the monarchy at the end of the First World War in 1918, the former Royal Court Pharmacy was transferred to the Württemberg State Finance Administration.

During the Second World War , the old chancellery and the farm pharmacy were almost completely destroyed by aerial bombs in the night of September 12th to 13th, 1944.

After the end of the Second World War, the Hof-Apotheke was first housed in its former rooms in the ruins of the old chancellery in 1947. While the old chancellery was being rebuilt, the Hof-Apotheke temporarily moved to the ruins of the Kronprinzenpalais in 1951. In 1955 the old chancellery was completed and Hofrat Fuchs moved the farm pharmacy into the new rooms in the old chancellery.

Fuchs ran an allopathic and homeopathic pharmacy and was replaced in 1955 by his son-in-law Wilhelm Spindler. Up until the 1980s, the homeopathic and the allopathic / conventional medicine area remained spatially separate from one another.

Current situation

Since the mid-1950s, the Hof-Apotheke has been back in the historic rooms of the old chancellery, centrally located between Schlossplatz and Schillerplatz . The modernization of the interiors in the 1990s was able to combine the modern with the historical and remained true to the traditional appearance of the pharmacy.

The pharmacy has been under the management of pharmacist Jan Tomsky since 1989. Today as then, the pharmacy has an extensive range of homeopathic and allopathic / conventional medicine. For the homeopathic department, the Hofapotheke has the approval for mail order pharmacies and thus operates Germany's largest online shop for single and complex homeopathic remedies.
