The Loosdorf High School on the Old Town Hall Square in the market town of Loosdorf in the Melk district in Lower Austria was a "landscape school" from 1574 to 1627, which roughly corresponded to a Protestant grammar school , with an almost academic level that was primarily intended to prepare students for theology studies. The former school building now serves as a residential building and is a listed building .

history

The high school in Loosdorf was built around 1574 by Hans Wilhelm von Losenstein on the advice of his father as a five-class Protestant model high school for noble and non-noble youth and was owned by the Schallaburg . The Loßdorf School Regulations, written in 1574 by Pastor Balthasar Masko and printed in Augsburg , are one of the most valuable sources on the history of education in Austria.

In 1592 the school became a "landscape school" and was financially supported by the provinces of Austria under the Enns . In the 17th century the support gradually diminished. In 1614 the school and the Schallaburg came into the possession of the Styrian Georg von Stubenberg . In 1627 the school was closed by Ferdinand II during the Counter Reformation . After the school was closed, the building was used for residential purposes. The house became a noble Freihof in the 19th century .

architecture

The free-standing square with an inner courtyard, built in 1574, was extended around 1590 and is probably the only surviving Protestant school building from the 16th century in Lower Austria. The two-storey building with a cordon cornice under a hipped roof has a neo-Gothic pointed arch portal with lunettes from the first half of the 19th century on each side. In the small rectangular courtyard there are barrel-arched arcades with passageways. Some of the rooms have groin vaults, some with younger partition walls.
