Hohenberger Forest

The Hohenberger Forest , located in the natural area of Selber Forst , consists of two densely wooded ridges northwest and west of the town of Hohenberg an der Eger in the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtel Mountains .
The northern part with the hills Großer Hengstberg (651 m) and Kleiner Hengstberg (623 m) is separated by the state road 2178 from Hohenberg an der Eger to Selb and the Egertal from the southern part with the extinct volcano Steinberg (653 m) and its secondary peaks Basalt hill (652 m) and Heiligenberg (651 m).

natural reserve

The Große Hengstberg is a nature reserve and has been declared a natural forest reserve Hengstberg by the government of Upper Franconia . It was also designated a Natura 2000 area (FFH 5839-302). The Kleine Hengstberg is a protected natural monument.

The Heiligenberg sub-area is a protected geotope . Its geoscientific value has been classified as "valuable" by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. The basalt hill is a protected landscape area .

Tourist development

The main hiking trail Mittelweg of the Fichtelgebirgsverein leads from Hohenberg across the Steinberg area , the Franconian mountain trail from Neuhaus an der Eger to Kothigenbibersbach touches the western foot of the mountain .
