geology

Typical volcanic tuffite from Hohenbol

The Hohenbol is a mountain of volcanic origin. It is one of the 355 volcanoes known from the Urach-Kirchheim volcanic area. It originated in the Miocene , when one of the volcanic chimneys of the Swabian volcano cut its way through the surrounding rock. The Hohenbol (especially in the west and north) was exposed by erosion of the softer surrounding material.

Others

The Hohenbol is clearly recognizable by a striking group of black pines on its summit, which stands out from the otherwise sparse vegetation and is therefore often called the “toothbrush”.

Since the thin and nutrient-poor layer of humus above the rock is quickly dried out by the exposed position of the wind and sun, it is difficult to allow vegetation. For this reason, a test group of 50 black pines was planted in 1916 . The origin of the seedlings is unclear.

The Teckberg and the summit of the Hohenbol (above the orchard slope ) are protected as a nature reserve .
