Hohenrode near Grillenberg in the Saxony-Anhalt district of Mansfeld-Südharz is a medieval desert in the Harz Mountains . The desert is registered in the local monument register as a ground monument.

Geographical location

The Hohenrode desert is located about 1.5 km (as the crow flies ) north-north-west of Grillenberg on a mountain slope south to west above the Helme tributary Gonna , in whose valley the state road  230 ( Wippra -Grillenberg) runs. Their remains are grouped in the forest to the west above a Gonna tributary known as the source stream . The Eulenstein is located near the desert .

History and description

The desert was excavated between 1935 and 1937 and archaeologically examined by Paul Grimm . It was repaired from 1969 to 1976, with the work being carried out by volunteers. In the 9th century, it was in Hersfelder tithe directory as Hohenrod called. From 1535 to 1547 Hohenrode is referred to in written sources as "Wüst" .

The former settlement can be dated to the 10th to 14th centuries, whereby the first phase characterized by wooden buildings (10th to 12th centuries) and a more recent phase characterized by stone buildings (12th to 14th centuries) could be distinguished. These two phases reveal the restructuring of a Slavic settlement during the German settlement in the east . Hearths were found in several houses.

In terms of research history, the excavations are an important step in the formation of an archeology of the Middle Ages, as Grimm deliberately included various sources - in addition to the archaeological findings, folklore observations and pictorial sources.
