The Hohe Dieb ( Italian Gran Ladro ) is a 2730  m slm high mountain in the access ridge of the Ortler Alps .

Location and surroundings

The Hohe Dieb is located in South Tyrol ( Italy ) roughly in the middle of the access ridge that stretches from southwest to northeast. The next higher elevation to the south-west is the Hasenöhrl ( 3257  m ), in the north-eastern ridge course the mountain structure drops to the two Kofelraster lakes (2402 and 2405  m ), behind which only peaks follow that hardly or no longer tower above the Hohen Dieb. The closest villages are Tarsch in the mountain range that borders the Vinschgau to the north and Kuppelwies in the southern Ultental . The municipal boundaries of Ulten , Latsch and Kastelbell-Tschars meet at the summit .

Climbs

The south summit

The Hohe Dieb is easy to climb via marked paths. Its southern summit, which is slightly pushed forward towards Ulten and bears a high cross, is more important for tourism; the slightly higher north summit is less visited. The climbs beginning in the south and north lead first to the Kofelraster lakes, where they turn to the southwest and lead over grass slopes, stepped rocks and boulder to the summit ridge. From the northwest, another climb leads directly to the north summit.

Surname

The origin of the name Hoher Dieb , which is first documented around 1900, is obscure. Egon Kühebacher suspects that the name might have been coined because of alpine animals that often disappeared on the mountain flanks. The considerations of Hans Paul Menara result in a slightly different direction: the two Kofelraster lakes are indeed south of the watershed, are thus to Ultimo drained out, but will - one thinks of the surrounding peaks of the Zufrittkamms by a straight line connected to each other - in one by The north bulging depression towards the Vinschgau, to which they - administratively located in the municipality of Kastelbell-Tschars - actually belong. Thus, the name of the high thief is at least not inappropriate, since its location has stolen the Kofelraster lakes and their fishing rights from the Ulten region .
