The high perennial phlox ( Phlox paniculata ), also known as panicle , autumn lilac or simply flame flower (also called high flame flower), is a species of the genus of flame flowers ( phlox ) in the family of pestilus plants (Polemoniaceae).

features

The high perennial phlox is a perennial herbaceous plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 50 to 120 centimeters. The stem is not spotted. The lateral nerves are clearly visible on the undersides of the leaves. The leaf margin is ciliated.

The shape of the inflorescence is spherical, conical, conical, cylindrical or pyramidal. The corolla tube is hairy on the outside.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The tall perennial phlox occurs in warm to temperate eastern North America in light forests and along rivers.

The tall perennial phlox is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders and perennial beds, and as a cut flower. His first reliable evidence in Europe comes from Dillenius , who described and illustrated him in his Hortus Elthamensis in 1732 . In Germany, it can be detected for the first time in 1765 in the Greifswald Botanical Garden and in the Berlin Botanical Garden . Since the 19th century, numerous varieties have been created that differ in height, flower color and flowering time.
