Hold You Tight ( Chinese  愈 快乐 愈 堕落 , Pinyin yù kuài lè yù duò luò , Cantonese  Yue faai lok yue doh lok ) is the seventh feature film by the Hong Kong-Chinese director Stanley Kwan . It is Kwan's first feature film after his documentary Yang & Yin. Gender in Chinese Cinema , at the end of which he comes out as gay . Hold You Tight represents a twist in Kwan's cinematic oeuvre, as the fates of gay men now come to the fore alongside portrayals of women's fates, which Kwan perfected in films such as Center Stage ( Lan Yu ).

action

The opening sequence of Hold You Tight takes the viewer to Hong Kong Airport. There two women who look very similar (played by the same actress) are waiting for their flight to Taipei . One of the two, a newly divorced businesswoman named Rosa, cannot find her plane ticket and misses the flight, which will save her life. The other woman, named Ah Moon, is going on a business trip.
The young lifeguard Jie, who had a relationship with Ah Moon, is now following her husband Fung Wai to find out more about this man and his relationship with Ah Moon. The longer Jie Fung Wai watches, the more drawn he becomes to him. Finally, Jie flees from his homoerotic desire to Taiwan, where he meets the businesswoman Rosa, whom the audience already knows from the opening sequence. Rosa's strong resemblance to the late Ah Moon attracts Jie and he can open up to her and trust her. She convinces him that he must return to Hong Kong and tell Fung Wai the truth.
On the sidelines of this story is the gay real estate agent Tong, who contrasts strongly with the subliminal desire of Jie in living out his sexuality. Tong also feels drawn to Fung Wai.
