Holger Eichhorn (born August 22, 1942 in Bromberg ) is a German musicologist, Zinkenist and conductor.

Life

Eichhorn grew up in a north German pastorate and initially received violin lessons . He gained his first wind experience in the church trombone choir , in order to then deal intensively with contemporary jazz. After graduating from high school and a year as a carer, he studied composition at the Berlin University of the Arts . At the same time, he dealt with historical musical instruments and learned how to play zinc by himself. At the Free University of Berlin he first studied medicine and theology and from 1967 musicology . In 1972 he founded the Musicalische Compagney as a wind quartet for zinc and trombones, which was quickly expanded to include other instruments and also performed with vocal soloists and choirs such as the Tölzer Knabenchor . Numerous radio and vinyl recordings were made with the ensemble. Eichhorn has given concerts in many European countries as well as in the USA. In terms of performance and research, Eichhorn confines himself to ensemble music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. One focus is on the musical work of Giovanni Gabrieli , Heinrich Schütz and Johann Rosenmüller . Concert activity, research and the consistent implementation of historical performance practice mutually stimulate each other, according to his motto: "the more historically precise, the more lively". In recent years, recordings of vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach in solo form have been made. The recording of the Christmas Oratorio , including a boy soprano, was a first recording with four vocal soloists.

Between 1987 and 1993, Eichhorn was a visiting professor for “Early Music, Interpretation and Performance Practice” at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2000 Eichhorn was a co-founder of the Johann Rosenmüller Society. He received his doctorate in 2003 from the University of Bremen with a thesis on Giovanni Gabrieli . In addition to writing technical articles and books, he has been the editor of the Rosenmüller Complete Edition since 2010.

His brother Joachim Eichhorn is a church musician and his brother Klaus Eichhorn is an organist and university professor .
