Holger Hanisch (born February 14, 1950 in Hamburg ; † October 16, 2006 there ) became known through the (co) establishment of numerous social projects in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli . His most outstanding activities included the struggle for the Hamburg harbor hospital and his work for socially disadvantaged people in Hamburg.

Life

Hanisch grew up as a two-year-old in a home in which he was put by his mother after his father's death, before his stepfather took him out again. From then on, he grew up with his four siblings under poor conditions in a 60 square meter apartment in Hamburg Karoviertel and dragged already with 12 years banana boxes to the family income supplement. At the age of 17 he moved into a youth hostel and began an apprenticeship as a gardener, which he broke off prematurely in favor of a job in a Christian diakonia . Disappointed by the discrepancy between word and deed during the care of the elderly, he left them again. From then on he worked as a telegram messenger at the post office .

Services

At the end of the 1970s he founded a tenants' initiative and was active as a works council at Philips for 20 years . In 1996, Hanisch and six other colleagues resigned in protest against the planned social cuts. As a gay activist he founded the Democratic Gay Initiative to dissuade the DKP from its anti-gay course. In 1998 he helped found the St. Pauli Kurverwaltung , which grants discounts at facilities in the Hamburg neighborhood with the help of a book of vouchers .

He was one of the initiators of the annual Hamburg beggar's march and one of the co-founders of the "CaFée mit Herz" in the St. Pauli district , which was set up for the homeless in the former harbor hospital . For the CaFée mit Herz, he collected money every week, insistently but unobtrusively, with a donation box through St. Pauli's amusement establishments, and in 2005 he was nominated for the Panter Prize of the taz for his work . Before that, he helped to found the initiative "A district stands up", which campaigned for the preservation of the harbor hospital and finally managed to create a social and health center there.

On October 16, 2006, around 11 a.m., Holger Hanisch died at the age of 56 in Hamburg due to leukemia .
