The Hafenkrankenhaus in Hamburg at Seewartenstraße 10 is a former hospital and today's medical and ambulance center.

history

The harbor hospital was founded in 1900 . In the beginning it was a police hospital for the medical care of those arrested. There were also departments for the compulsory treatment of venereal diseases and for the safe custody of arrested drunk and madmen. In the course of the expansions and growing responsibilities, a separate morgue , a number of beds for female patients and a ward for emergency deliveries were added.

The facilities of the port hospital also included an admission and dressing station, to which people were admitted who were injured or ill on public streets and in public places. Injured shipyard and port workers or relatives of the ship's crews anchored in the port were also expressly the responsibility of the port hospital.

Over the years, due to its location in the immediate vicinity of the entertainment district around the Reeperbahn and the harbor , the harbor hospital has developed into a municipal specialist clinic for trauma surgery and emergency care.

In 1974 and 1978 the closure of the port hospital was discussed repeatedly, but it was temporarily averted in 1982. In 1996, the Senate made the final decision to close it, as part of the dismantling of a total of 913 hospital beds in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The harbor hospital, which was no longer profitable, had no support from a political lobby because of its location in the socially disadvantaged district of St. Pauli and was also the smallest of the city's hospitals.

Contrary to the expectations of the Senate, the closure aroused major protests not only among the residents of the affected district, but also among large parts of the Hamburg population - especially since the port hospital was seen as an important part of Hamburg's tradition. At the beginning of 1997 the hospital was occupied by the citizens' initiative A district stands up, which was co-founded by Holger Hanisch . While the protest actions could no longer avert the closure of the harbor hospital, they led to the decision of the Senate to set up a medical care center called the St. Pauli Health Center on part of the site . Since 1999, 25 medical practices and social institutions have settled in the buildings of the former harbor hospital. As a result of an initiative by the doctors resident there, a port ambulance has been in existence again since 2003.

In 1968 the NDR produced the 13-part television series Hafenkrankenhaus with stories about this house. The director was Erich Neureuther . The main actress was Anneli Granget as sister Inge. Rolf Schimpf , later chief inspector Leo Kress from the crime series Der Alte , was seen in another leading role . The Hafenkrankenhaus series was created for the evening program and was one of the most popular television series in 1968. The producer was Gyula Trebitsch .
