Holger Krestel (born November 11, 1955 in Berlin ) is a German politician of the FDP .

Life

After graduating from a university of applied sciences in 1974 at the Technical College for Economics and Administration in Berlin-Schöneberg , Krestel first completed a degree in administrative sciences (Dipl.-Verwaltungswirt) at the University of Applied Sciences for Administration and Justice (today Berlin School of Economics and Law ). He later studied political science at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin (diploma in political science). Until 2001 he worked in various administrative organizations in the State of Berlin.

Holger Krestel is married and belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.

Krestel was a member of the CDU from 1973 to 1987. In the first half of the 1970s he belonged to a group of high school students who founded the Berliner Schüler Union - a CDU-affiliated political youth association. Krestel left the CDU in 1987 and joined the FDP in 1989. Krestel is chairman of the FDP in Berlin-Tempelhof and the Berlin FDP district association Tempelhof-Schöneberg . From 2001 to 2006 Krestel was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives for the FDP . There he was deputy chairman of the committee for administrative reform and represented the FDP in the committee of inquiry into the Berlin banking scandal .

He was a member of the German Bundestag since May 20, 2010 . He succeeded Hellmut Königshaus , as he left the Bundestag as defense commissioner .

Krestel represented the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag as a permanent member of the finance committee and the petitions committee . He was also an alternate member of the Defense Committee .

Due to the failure of his party to pass the five percent hurdle in the 2013 Bundestag election , he is no longer represented in the 18th Bundestag.

In the election for the Berlin House of Representatives in 2016 , he was re-elected to the Berlin House of Representatives via the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district list. He is deputy chairman of the FDP parliamentary group, chairman of the committee for constitutional and legal affairs, rules of procedure, consumer protection, anti-discrimination; he is also deputy chairman of the Committee for the Protection of the Constitution. He is an advisory member of the Interior Committee.

Controversy

During the parliamentary debate on the “ climate emergency ” in the Berlin House of Representatives, Krestel called the Left MP Michael Efler a “climate fascist” and accused him of fighting for “eco-jihad”. He later apologized for his choice of words.
