The Holland- class is a 3,750-tonne displacement class of ocean-going patrol boats of the Royal Netherlands Navy . Construction of the first of the four ships began in 2008, and all units have been in service since 2013.

history

The boats are procured as part of the Patrouilleschepen project for patrols and surveillance tasks in the exclusive economic zone of the Netherlands and the Caribbean islands of the Netherlands Antilles . The company Royal Schelde / Damen Shipyards Group received the 240 million euro development and construction contract in December 2007, while Thales Nederland secured a 125 million euro contract for the development and delivery of integrated mast modules.

The frigate- sized boats are the first units in the Dutch Navy after World War II to have light armor, which led to speculation in the Netherlands . Another reason for speculation is the unusually powerful sensor equipment supplied by Thales for ocean patrol boats. This includes in particular an X-band AESA radar of the SEASTAR / SEA WATCHER 100 type and an S-band AESA radar of the SMILE / SEA MASTER 400 type , which are combined with other sensors in the so-called I-mast 400 . The speculations in this regard relate primarily to the possibility of installing significantly more powerful weapon systems and, in particular, the scaffolding of the ESSM . The boats are powered by a RENK CODELOD drive system. The double helical gearbox provides an input for a MAN 12V 28 / 33D diesel engine with 5460 kW power and an electric motor with a multi-plate clutch each. In diesel mode, the boat reaches a maximum speed of 21.5 knots; in purely electric mode, around 11 knots are achieved with 400 kW per shaft. The gearbox is designed for low-noise operation and integrates the thrust bearing in the gearbox housing.

units

The first two ships were built at Royal Schelde in Vlissingen, with the hull sections coming from the Romanian branch of the Damen group in Galați . The other two units were completely built in Romania. They were given the names of Dutch provinces and have the abbreviation Zr in front of their name . Ms. or initially during Queen Beatrix's term of office, Mr. Ms. what for Zijner / Harer Majesteits schip , in German His / Her Majesty's ship, stands. Outside the Netherlands, however, based on the British abbreviation HMS , HNLMS is often used, which stands for His / Her Netherlands Majesty's Ship .

However, due to budget cuts, the government's white paper published in April 2011 provided for only two ships to be put into service, the other two units to be resold. In the meantime, however, all units have been taken over into the Navy.
