content

The film is about the Turk Alper, who pretends to be Italian in order to win the heart of a German girl who doesn't like Turks. Alper wants to become an actor, but has little success and is only ever offered roles as a kebab seller or gangster. But he doesn't even get that. One evening he ran into pretty Sophie. Sophie has to make a video portrait of an Italian for admission to the art academy. Alper overhears this by chance and since he still needs a demo tape anyway and he likes Sophie a lot, he pretends to be Italian Alberto and wins the role with a few tricks and with the help of his friends. He befriends Sophie more and more and, through contact with her mother, wins a casting for a movie. While Alper thinks the film is his breakthrough as an actor and hero, it turns out that they are looking for a non-Turkish actor to play the role of a Turkish, Islamist, homosexual terrorist. He continues to pretend to be Italian and the director praises him for never having seen a better Turk from a non-Turk and gives Alper the role. While Alper is on the one hand happy about his first major film role, he is in conflict with the film's statement that there is a potential terrorist behind every Turkish or Muslim. Alper, who as an Italian thinks himself closer to his goals, is also getting more and more problems. When his father discovers him in a scene, he has to deny it in order not to blow his cover in front of Sophie. Another time, he is not allowed to show that he understands Turkish while a Turkish salesman insults him in Turkish in his presence. Sophie always fends off Alper's self-confident macho advances and a fight ensues between them. Sophie breaks off the video portrait and forgets her notebook. When Alper wants to bring it to her in the evening, they are attacked by a couple of boys. Alper defends Sophie, but both got injured. When Sophie takes care of Alper in her apartment, she reveals in a drunk state why she doesn't like Turks. Alper asks Sophie if they don't want to finish the video after all. In a recorded theatrical monologue, Alper talks about his feelings and Sophie is surprised at how much depth she discovers behind Alper's macho facade. On the first day of shooting the film, Alper decides to come out that he is not Alberto, the Italian, but Turkish and that he cannot play this role because it generally portrays the Turks badly. Sophie, who made it to the final round due to the video portrait, wants to thank Alper and drives to the shoot without Alper's knowledge. There she witnesses how Alper comes out as a Turk, whereupon she is disappointed in Alper. Due to the emotional confusion, Sophie fails the final exam and decides to leave Berlin and work in her father's company from now on. Alper persuades her not to give up her dream and they reconcile.
