The Holtumer Moor is a partial vermoorte lowlands in the municipality Kirchlinteln in Verden and in the community Ahausen in Rotenburg (Wümme) in Lower Saxony .
The valley is located in the Achim-Verden Geest north of the location Holtum (Geest) in a flat undulating ground moraine landscape of Saale cold time , in the above a salt dome by lowering the soil due to leaching processes an approximately six square kilometers sink has formed. Here water collected and formed a lake, which later silted up , whereupon the formation of bog began. In the process, fens often formed, on which a raised bog grew in parts .
Traces from the Bronze and Iron Ages bear witness to the settlement of the area surrounding the depression. After peat mining had already taken place in the Middle Ages , the cultivation of the moors began towards the end of the 18th century . A predominantly grassland area of varying degrees of moisture was created. The grasslands are partially divided by hedges and woody structures. In addition, there are areas with alluvial forest and quarry forest as well as, in some cases, small moor forests on drained raised bogs. On unused land settle Hochstaudenfluren or Seggensümpfe.
The agricultural land was largely used extensively until the 1960s. This was followed by an intensification of use, which was accompanied by increased drainage and the conversion of suitable areas to arable land . The intensification of use led to a significant decrease in biodiversity in the area.
At the end of the 1970s, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland began buying land in the area. They serve to preserve habitats and structures worthy of protection. Further protection areas belong to the Verden district or to private landowners. Parts of the land are leased to farmers, who cultivate them extensively, taking into account the protection purpose and thus contribute to the preservation of the cultural landscape and the various habitats for plants and animals. The area is the habitat of various birds , amphibians , reptiles and insects such as grasshoppers and butterflies .
The area is drained via numerous ditches to the Everser Bach , which flows through the area in the north. In the north, the " Auequelle " nature reserve is located in the lowland and parts of the " Wolfsgrund " nature reserve extend into the lowland. Several farm roads run through the area, from which parts of the landscape can be experienced.
