occupation

Homo Faber (three women) is a semi-documentary feature film by Swiss director Richard Dindo from the year 2014. In a so-called "cinematic reading" three actresses represent the female characters from the novel Homo Faber by Max Frisch : Marthe Keller as "Hanna", Daphne Baiwir as "Sabeth" and Amanda Barron as "Ivy". Texts from Frisch's novel are read in by Christian Kohlund .

action

The Swiss engineer Walter Faber flies to South America. His plane has to make an emergency landing in the Mexican desert. In the light of the moon he films his shadow on the sandy ground and gives us a first impression of his exclusively objective “worldview” and state of mind.

He later visits his American lover Ivy in New York, from whom he separates. On the crossing to Le Havre he met the young Sabeth on the ship. They meet again in Paris and travel together to Avignon, Rome and Athens. On the way they become lovers. The young woman is bitten by a snake at the seaside of Accro-Corinth and dies two days later in a hospital in Athens. There Faber meets his former fiancée Hanna, whom he has not seen for 20 years. It turns out that she is Sabeth's mother and he is the father.

Faber himself does not appear in the film. But he looks at the three women, observes and films them and later describes his own pictures with sentences from the book.

background

The film was produced by Lea Produktion Richard Dindo in Zurich. The world premiere took place on August 14, 2014 at the Locarno International Film Festival .

As early as 1981 Richard Dindo had implemented a story by Frisch with Montauk in the documentary Max Frisch, Journal I – III .

reception

Rolf Breiner, critic of the web culture magazine Literatur & Kunst , found the film "thoroughly conclusive and captivating". He criticized, however, that the relationship between Faber and Sabeth remains "static and half-hearted literary". The sensuality freezes in words.
