The Honda RC174 is a racing motorcycle from the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Honda from 1967.

Racing use

The most famous driver of the RC174 was Mike Hailwood , who u. a. the world championship in the class up to 250 cm³ in 1961 with the Honda RC162 and 1966 and 1967 with the RC166 . Hailwood won six of the eight 350cc races held on the RC174 in the 1967 season and was thus sovereignly ahead of the Italian Giacomo Agostini ( MV Agusta ) world champion in this displacement category. The superiority of the machine was demonstrated by the fact that in 1967 the RC174 won a total of seven out of a total of eight races - Hailwood's team-mate Ralph Bryans , who came third in the World Championship, was victorious at the Grand Prix of Nations in Monza .

At that time, the number of cylinders was not limited by the regulations, so that high performance could also be achieved with four-stroke engines . In this way, Honda was able to prevail against the strong competition from two-stroke machines at the time . When the number of cylinders was limited by the regulations at the end of the 1960s, Honda could no longer keep up with the competing two-stroke engines and withdrew from this class by 1985.

Technical specifications

The Honda RC174 was powered by a six - cylinder four-stroke engine with 297.06  cm³ displacement and an output of 48  kW (65  hp ). The maximum speed of the engine was 17,000 rpm .

With a bore of 41 mm and a stroke of 37.5 mm, the cylinder volume is 49.5 cm³. The exhaust gases are discharged by a six-in-six exhaust system . Since machines of this type are built individually in very small series, the specified performance occasionally varies.

Replica

George Beale from Great Britain has built some replicas of the RC174 for Honda, which can be purchased for 450,000 euros each.
