The 1983 Camus Hong Kong Masters was a professional snooker invitation tournament for the 1983/84 season . The first edition of the tournament was held from August 5th to 7th, 1983 at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong . The winner in an all-Welsh final was Doug Mountjoy , who declared himself the winner of the tournament with a 4-3 win over former world champion Terry Griffiths . In contrast, Griffiths played the highest break and at the same time the only century break of the tournament with a 140 break in the penultimate frame of the final .
Prize money
The tournament was sponsored by the French cognac distillery Camus , which also appeared in this function during the following three editions. However, there was no official prize money. However, since the tournament was part of a series of Barry Hearns Matchroom Sport and Camus-sponsored series of Asian tournaments, the players received, for example, several bottles of cognac in addition to the free first-class flights.
Tournament course
A total of six players took part in the tournament, two of which were professional players from England and Wales. Two of these professional players each met a Hong Kong amateur player in the first round in the best of 3 frames mode , followed by the semi-finals over a maximum of five frames and the final in the best of 7 frames mode in the knockout system .

final
With Doug Mountjoy and Terry Griffiths , two Welsh met in the final. Mountjoy, at that time a two-time winner of Triple Crown tournaments, had reached the semi-finals with a victory over the local amateur Cheun Chi-Ming and reached the final there with a 3-0 white wash over Steve Davis . Griffiths, on the other hand, had been successful in all three triple-crown tournaments in recent years, with the ex-1979 world champion only starting the tournament in the semifinals and reaching the final there with a 3-2 win over Tony Meo .
Griffiths dominated the beginning of the game and took a 2-0 lead before Mountjoy shortened with a 94-1 in the next frame and as a result first equalized and finally took the lead 3-2. Even if Griffiths equalized with a 140 break in the next frame, the decider went 58:40 to Mountjoy, who won both the game and the tournament.
