Way of life

Young fish live hidden among branchy Acropora stone corals. They feed mainly on crabs (63% on stomach examinations) and fish (35%). Adult animals eat fish (68%), crabs (22%) and cephalopods (8%). You are not shy. Like all perch , the animals change sex in the course of their life. After reaching sexual maturity, they are initially female and, as they grow, transform into males. Honeycomb groupers with a length of 16 cm are still female, with a length of 20 cm almost all animals are male. On the Society Islands, the fish spawn from January to April. Spawning activities begin 2 to 3 days before the full moon in each of these months and last for 3 to 4 days.
