museum
A steam engine was still in use until 2006 and the beer is still delivered by horse and cart. The tower brewery, built in Victorian style in 1849, uses gravity to transport the product: mashing , fermentation and racking are carried out in a logical sequence. The historic brewery and a factory museum can be visited.
business
Hook Norton Brewery used a Buxton & Thornley steam engine until 2006 , which has operated the majority of the machines since 1899. It was the last commercially used steam engine in Great Britain. The steam engine drove the pumps, the mill, the mash rake and the lifts for sacks and barrels via a belt system. Whenever gears were used, an iron wheel was paired with a wooden one so that only a few wooden teeth had to be changed if the gearbox was overloaded.
Steam power continued to be used primarily for commercial reasons, as the procurement costs of the steam engine had long been written off and a conversion to electrical drives would have required investment costs, the depreciation of which would have exceeded the maintenance costs for the steam engine.
