Horace Clyde Filley (also H. Clyde Filley , HC Filley , Horace C. Filley ; born December 27, 1878 in Filley , Gage County , Nebraska , USA , † March 15, 1973 in Lincoln , Lancaster County , Nebraska, USA) was a American agricultural economist .

Life

Family and education

Born in the village of Filley in the US state of Nebraska, Horace Clyde Filley, son of Elmer C. Filley and Annette Foster Filley, studied at the Peru State Teachers College from 1896 to 1899. He then devoted himself to the study of economics and agricultural sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln , in 1903 he acquired the academic degree of a Bachelor of Arts , in 1911 a Master of Arts . In 1929 he completed postgraduate studies in the University of Chicago summer courses . In 1934 he received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota to the Doctor of Philosophy .

The Methodist baptized Horace Clyde Filley married on October 11, 1911 Creta Warner. The marriage had the children Vernon Warner, Marjorie, Edith and Dorothy. He died in March 1973 at the age of 94 in Lincoln.

Professional background

Horace Clyde Filley was employed as a Principal in Staplehurst, Nebraska, from 1899 to 1900 . After various activities that followed, he was hired in 1911 as an instructor in farm management at the Department of Farm Management at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in 1912 he was promoted to assistant professor and in 1914 to professor and head of department. From 1919 he worked as Professor of Rural Economics and head of the department of the same name, and in 1949 he retired . His activity in Lincoln was interrupted from December 1934 to April 1935 by a position as a consulting economist for the Farmers National Grain Dealers Association Commission in Chicago , Illinois .

Horace Clyde Filley acted as director, since 1949 as economist for the Union Life Insurance Company, in 1940 he was elected to the Executive Committee. The Republican Party member was a member of the Nebraska State Legislature from 1911 to 1913 . Since 1910 he participated in a farm in Beatrice , Nebraska. The Masonic and Master of the Nebraska State Grange Filley was a member of the American Economic Association , the American Farm Economic Association, the American Association of University Professors, the Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta scientific associations, the Nebraska Writers Guild and the Board of Trustees of the Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Horace Clyde Filley, author of numerous articles in his field, was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement in 1957. Filley Hall on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was named after him.
