history

The Hornettes were founded in 1979, then with Gitta Walther , Dagmar Hellberg , Lucy Neale (aka Lucy O'Day) and Christina Harrison . Except for Hellberg, all founders were previously members of the band Love Generation, which was dissolved in 1978 . In this line-up, the Hornettes only recorded the single Stop / Not Too Young produced by Rainer Pietsch .

The quartet split from Hellberg in 1980. Linda G. Thompson took her place . She and Gitta Walther also went to the Cornely Singers together . In 1981 the quartet took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Mannequin composed by Ralph Siegel and came in second. The song written by Bernd Opinioner remained the most successful of the Hornettes and stayed in the German music charts for twelve weeks with a top position at position 27. In the same year, the band with the title Waikiki Tamouré , also produced by Ralph Siegel, was able to continue for another six weeks placed in the German charts, but only reached number 52. In 1982, the debut album We Are On The Way-O was released on Jupiter Records.

In 1983 the quartet took part in the Austrian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with Hello, Mr. Radio and reached third place. In 1985 Neale and Harrison left the quartet, and Freya Wippich (wife of Bernd Wippich ) and Jackie Carter joined them. In 1993 Carter left the formation and pursued her solo career. As a trio, the Hornettes released the albums Holiday and World Successes in 1994 , produced by Jürgen Marcus .
