The Horseshoe Valley ( English "Horseshoe Valley") is an ice-covered valley in the Heritage Range , the southern chain of the Ellsworth Mountains in West Antarctica . The horseshoe-shaped valley is bounded by the mountain ranges of the Independence Hills , Marble Hills , Liberty Hills , Enterprise Hills , Douglas Peaks and Patriot Hills .
The name of the valley was first used by American naval pilots who flew in the area. A research expedition from the University of Minnesota , which visited the area in the years 1962-63, suggested upon return to take the name as an official name. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names complied with this proposal in 1965.
In 1996 and 1997, as part of the project "Glaciologic studies at Patriot Hills, Antarctica" funded by the Chilean Antarctic Institute, precise measurements of the ice cover in the Horseshoe Valley were carried out using ground penetrating radar . In addition, the ice flow and the surface topography of the valley were measured using GPS .
