Horst Gärtner (sports scientist)

Horst gardener (* 1926 / 1927 ; † 11. November 1992 ) was a German sports scientists and university teachers .

Life

Gärtner completed his doctoral thesis in Berlin in 1956 on the subject of "Problems of educational work in school teams with special consideration of the principles and methods of collective education". In mid-April 1959 he moved from Berlin to Greifswald and became director of the sports institute at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald . Under his leadership, “physical education in the lower school” became one of the most important sports science research areas at the Greifswald Sports Institute. In the 1960s he was one of the authors of the works "40 gymnastics lessons for the 3rd and 4th grade" and "Youth in sports dress (a manual for the youth leader)". In 1965 Gärtner's habilitation (subject: "Investigations on the influence of daily sporting practice on the physical and athletic development of children in the first and second school years") was accepted in Greifswald , and from 1967 he taught as a professor of sports science. Gärtner was initially in charge of the Greifswald Sports Institute until 1968. From 1969 he was Vice Dean of the University of Greifswald and Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Council for Physical Culture and Sport in the GDR. Between 1974 and 1985 he was again head of the Greifswald Sports Institute. In 1979 Gärtner and his Greifswald colleagues were honored with the GutsMuths Prize by the State Secretariat for Physical Culture and Sport of the GDR . In 1980 and 1984 he presented the results of the sports science research carried out in Greifswald at world congresses of sports science.

Gärtner's main research area was school sport, he dealt among other things with characteristics of children and youth sport, the "contribution of school sport to the development of the socialist way of life" sport for girls and physical education in all-day education and upbringing.

In September 1989 he was awarded the title of " Honored University Professor of the GDR ".

He died on November 11, 1992 in a traffic accident. Gärtner was called the " Nestor of Greifswald School Sports Research".
