Horst Hagen

Horst Hagen (born January 5, 1934 in Opole , Upper Silesia Province ; † December 5, 2019 ) was a German lawyer . For many years he was a judge at the Federal Court of Justice and its vice-president from 1994 to 1999.

Life

After completing his legal training, Hagen first entered the higher judicial service in Schleswig-Holstein in 1961 . After his probationary period, he was appointed regional judge at the Kiel Regional Court in 1965 , but was seconded to Kiel University as a research assistant in 1966. There he completed his habilitation in 1970 with a thesis on The Third-Party Damage Liquidation in the Change of Legal Dogmatics . Afterwards, Hagen took over a professorship in Frankfurt am Main for several years, but then returned to the judicial service at the Schleswig Higher Regional Court in 1973 . Elected judge at the Federal Court of Justice in 1975, Hagen was a member of the 5th Civil Senate, which was primarily responsible for property law, throughout his entire activity at this court, and from May 1988 as its chairman. From 1994 until his retirement on January 31, 1999, Hagen was Vice President of the Federal Court of Justice.

Outside of his judicial work, he worked with great commitment in the Legal Study Society (at the Federal Court of Justice), 10 years of which as its chairman. "The aim of the company to promote an exchange of ideas between scientists and practitioners on current and fundamental issues has always been a particular concern of his."
