Hamann mainly takes photos with a Linhof Technorama , a panorama camera and a Schneider-Kreuznach lens . His idea of placing the panorama camera in the 6x17 format vertically caused an international sensation. His book New York Vertical , which was written between 1991 and 1996, shows completely new aspects of the city, which has already been photographed many times. As a result, further vertical city portraits were created. He was the first living German photographer to have a six-month solo exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York from 1998–99 .
