Horst Meier (agent)
Horst Meier (* 1925 at Zeitz ; † autumn 2016 ) was a German agent and visual artist.
Meier trained as an electrician and served on the Eastern Front in 1944 during World War II . He remained in captivity for five years . In Riga he attended an antifa school . After his release he graduated from high school, studied journalism in Leipzig and worked as a culture editor in Suhl . He married and had four children with his wife. In 1960 the marriage was divorced.
Later it took Klaus Roesler , a friend from the anti-fascist school in the Main Intelligence (HVA), the foreign intelligence service of the GDR . Under the name of Erwin Miserre (the name of an emigrant from the GDR via the Federal Republic to Canada) he traveled to the Federal Republic and then to Brussels , the seat of NATO . As a resident , he acted as a middleman between the local agents and the headquarters of the HVA. His commanding officer was Karl Rehbaum , to whom the spy Rainer Rupp alias Topas was also subordinate.
In Brussels, Meier attended courses in sculpture and assisted the well-known Belgian sculptor Olivier Strebelle . After the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution had found out that the HVA was using the biographies of Germans abroad for agents and there was a risk of exposure, Meier was ordered back to the GDR in 1976. His Belgian girlfriend accompanied him; they married and had two children. Meier lived as an artist in Brandenburg for 40 years. He signed his works with EM , the first letter of his camouflage name. He made a sculpture in 1983 for the HVA boss Markus Wolf . He died at the age of 91 as a care case.
