Peter G. Stone (* 1957 in Manchester ) is a British prehistoric scientist .

Life

Peter Stone studied at the University of Stirling , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Diploma of Education (DipEd) in 1979 . From January 1979 to July 1980 he was a history teacher at St Peter's High School in Doncaster . From October 1980 to June 1981 he worked as an English teacher in Athens . In his spare time he undertook archaeological field research in various archaeological sites in England , such as Coppergate in York , in the Anglo-Saxon Hamwic in Southampton , and at Hambledon Hill in Dorset . In 1983 he received a Master of Arts degree in archaeological methodology and theory from the University of Southampton . From February 1985 to March 1988 he was the project manager and coordinator of the University's Archeology and Education Project . He then worked for English Heritage from 1988 . First from March 1988 to November 1995 as Regional Education Officer for their South West Historic Properties , then from November 1995 to September 1997 as Education Officer for Further, Adult and Higher Education . From November 1991 to December 1992 he was acting regional administrator for the South West Properties in Care of the English Heritage and was thus responsible for more than 100 historically valuable properties, including Stonehenge . 1991 doctorate he with the dissertation Teaching the Past, with Special Reference to Prehistory in English Primary Education at the University of Southampton for Ph.D.

Stone has worked at Newcastle University since 1997, from October 1997 to August 2000 as a Lecturer in Heritage Studies at the Department of Archeology and at the International Center for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS) and from August 2000 to 2007 as Senior Lecturer in Heritage Studies at the ICCHS. He was also director of the ICCHS from August 2001 to December 2005 and has been director of the university's School of Arts and Cultures since 2006 . 2016 he was appointed to the newly established Chair UNESCO Chair in Cultural Property Protection and Peace appointed.

2003, before the invasion in Iraq , he became an archaeological consultant in the UK Ministry of Defense and was dealing with issues related to the identification and protection of historical cultural assets of the country. From 2005 to 2012 he was Chairman of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site Management Plan Committee . From 2005 to 2011 he was a member of the cultural committee of the UK National Commission for UNESCO and from 2005 to 2012 a member of the archaeological committee of the National Trust .

Internationally, Stone was heavily involved in the establishment and development of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) and was a member of the working group that developed the UNESCO World Heritage Education project .

He is a member of the Council for British Archeology and the World Archaeological Congress . In 1991 he was elected a member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists . In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London . In 2011 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire . His book The Destruction of Cultural Heritage in Iraq received the James R Wiseman Book Award from the Archaeological Institute of America that same year . The World Archaeological Congress presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 for his services to international archeology, as well as the Peter Ucko Memorial Award .

Stone is married with four children.
