Horst Slevogt grew up in Eckernförde ( Villa Kruckau ) and graduated from high school there. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy as an officer candidate . After basic, on-board and submarine training in 1939–1941 and a building instruction for the U 218 , he was first 2nd and then 1st watch officer of the U 218 from 1942–1943. After a commanders course and commanders - Shooting course in 1943 Slevogt became commander of the U 62 (1943/1944).
This was followed in 1944/45 courses and building instruction for the U 3032 , an electric boat , before he took over command of this submarine, which was only put into service at the beginning of 1945 ("commissioning commander ") . The U 3032 was sunk on May 3, 1945 in the Fehmarnbelt by the British Air Force by Hawker Typhoons . There were 28 dead in the attack.
After the Second World War, Slevogt studied economics and social sciences and in 1955 submitted his dissertation on key figure statistics as an aid to balance sheet criticism at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Frankfurt . He took over the chairmanship of the board of directors of the Chase Manhattan Bank subsidiary Familienbank in the mid-1970s . In 1989 he accused the banks and savings banks of incorrectly calculating costs and income in payment transactions, so that they came to the conclusion that this division was in deficit.
In his hometown of Eckernförde , Slevogt dealt with political issues (for example, he submitted his own counter-calculations to his party, the SPD, for the controversial Borbyhof building project ), researched the city's history and published the story in his book volumes Eckernförde - The History of a German Merchant Town in the Duchy of Schleswig .
