Horst Zander

Horst Zander (born April 24, 1939 in Aachen ; † December 13, 2012 in Graz ) was an Austrian director and theater director.

Life

After graduating from high school, Zander studied philosophy, German, history and theater studies at the universities of Heidelberg, Würzburg, Munich and Vienna. In 1963 he began his theater career as an assistant director in Graz. His teachers included Rudolf Hartmann ( Munich State Opera ), Adolf Rott ( Vienna State Theater ) and André Diehl ( Graz theaters ). From 1967 to 1972 he was evening director and from 1972 to 1983 senior director at the Vereinigte Bühnen, Graz.

From 1964 to 1989 he worked closely with Herbert von Karajan's directing team at the Salzburg Easter and Summer Festival . From 1969 to 2005 he taught dialogue and opera drama as a professor at the Art University Graz .

From 1981 to 2002 Horst Zander was director of Austria's oldest city theater - the Leoben City Theater . During this time the association “Young Theater Graz” was founded (1994) and its own opera and operetta productions were established to promote young singers at the Leoben City Theater. Over fifteen operettas and five operas that Horst Zander brought to the stage with young talents from the Graz University of Art were performed. For this project and for his tireless work in promoting young singers, he was awarded the City of Leoben Culture Prize in 2001. The laudation was given by a close friend and companion - Hans Stolz, the great-nephew of the composer Robert Stolz .

In addition, Horst Zander has repeatedly been invited to directorial assignments, for example at the Baden stage (1997 Der Zarewitsch and 1998 Der Bettelstudent ) and the Classionata Festival (2011 One Night in Venice ). From 2008 to 2010 he was director and artistic advisor of the Coburg Summer Operetta , where, under his direction, Countess Mariza in 2008 , Wiener Blut in 2009 and My Fair Lady (direction and the role of Colonel Pickering) were staged with great success. He also made a name for himself as an actor, among others with the Little Comedy Graz, where he started 2000 A Woman at 40 (Bernard), 2002 Sonny Boys (Willie Clark), 2004 Cactus Blossom (Julien Desforges) and 2005 Otello must not burst (theater director) played. Moderation of numerous operetta concerts and galas (most recently the “Robert Stolz Gala” at the Coburg Summer Operetta in 2009) rounded off his artistic work.

Productions

Zander staged 47 operas as well as 33 operettas and musical comedies.
