Hotel St. Gotthard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hotel St. Gotthard is a hotel on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich . It was founded in 1889 by the Zurich hotelier Kaspar Manz and is still family-owned today.

history

In 1889, the Zurich hotelier Kaspar Manz took over the small Hotel St. Gotthard, which was located in what was then still an insignificant part of Zurich near the train station: on what would later become Bahnhofstrasse. By 1907, Kaspar Manz had bought four other surrounding buildings that were attached to the hotel. In 1910 Ernst Manz, Kaspar Manz's son, took over the hotel. In the next two decades he adapted the hotel to the developments. Warm water was available to guests in the rooms from 1913, and in 1920 room telephones and shared bathrooms were introduced. Even under the difficult economic situation in the 1930s , Ernst Manz continued to expand the hotel. The lobster and oyster bar was opened in 1935 . In 1945 eight rooms had a private bathroom and in 1959 all rooms had a private bathroom.

In 1951 Caspar E. Manz , son of Ernst Manz, took over the management of the hotel. In 1974 he married Ljuba Manz-Lurje , with whom he expanded business activities between 1970 and 1981 through various acquisitions of hotels in Switzerland and South America. In 1987 the Hotel St. Gotthard was incorporated into a stock corporation and in 1997 into Manz Privacy Hotels Switzerland (MPH), which is the owner of the Hotel St. Gotthard to this day. In 1987 Ljuba Manz-Lurje took over the management of the Manz Privacy Hotel Group as President of the Board of Directors, of which she has been a member since 1974. The marriage of Caspar E. Manz († 2010) with Ljuba Manz-Lurje resulted in the two twin sons Alexander and Michael Manz.

Thanks to its location, the hotel was also frequented by celebrities. During the Second World War, US General Eisenhower and the English Field Marshal Montgomery met for secret talks in the Hotel St. Gotthard in 1942. Henri Guisan , Henry Kissinger and the Dalai Lama as well as Maria Callas , Arnold Schwarzenegger and Swiss Federal Councilors were among the guests of the house.

present

The Hotel St. Gotthard has 138 rooms, eleven of which are suites on five floors. The «St. Gotthard Suite »is the largest suite on Bahnhofstrasse at 84 square meters.

The hotel houses the lobster and oyster bar founded in 1935, the “lobby bistro ”, an Italian coffee and aperitivo bar and the “Piazzetta terrace”, which is directly adjacent to Bahnhofstrasse. The lobster and oyster bar is a meeting place for Zurich society.
