Robin and Barney have been together all summer now, but unfortunately they don't want to admit that. Lily tries to explain to the two that you have to define your relationship and Lily locks them up one morning in the bedroom. She forces Robin and Barney to talk about their relationship. Meanwhile, Ted is giving his first lecture at the university where he now has a new job as a professor. Only after his lecture does he notice that he is in the wrong lecture hall. Finally, Robin and Barney claim to have talked to each other. However, they lied to Lily and the two of them say they are now in a committed relationship. Lily lets them out, but knows that they lied, but says that neither of them knew that they were actually telling the truth.

Ted has a blind date with a woman and it takes some time for both of them to realize that they have had a similar date before. They uncover each other's quirks until they realize that the first date wasn't bad, but rather failed because Ted stopped calling. Barney takes Marshall to a strip club, where they both discover a dancer who is Lily's doppelganger. Lily is excited, but Robin is angry because Barney was in the club. Ted and the woman decide to both wait for someone to like each other's quirks.

Finally, Robin and Barney apologize to Lily and Marshall. Teds meets a woman in the bar and his time as a sexless host ends.

Ted and Marshall want to go to their favorite pizzeria, but Lily joins Ted, much to Ted's displeasure. In order not to be deported, Robin has to become an American, which plunges her into a deep existential crisis. During a stopover, Lily falls asleep in the hotel, Ted and Marshall just drive on without her. Robin gets drunk and wakes up in Canada, where Barney finds her. There she realizes that she is no longer Canadian either and decides to take both citizenships. Ted and Marshall return to Lily, who slept the whole time and didn't notice anything.

Ted is annoyed by his neighbors, who sleep together very often and uninhibited (in relation to his children he replaces it with "playing the bagpipes"). Marshall is convinced of his theory, but fails miserably and gets into a heated argument with Lily about it. Barney and Robin, meanwhile, seem like the perfect couple, which puzzles Ted. With the help of her neighbor, he finds out that the two actually argue all the time. When they tell Marshall and Lily they make up again immediately.

On Thanksgiving day, Lily's father suddenly appears at the door, but Lily slams the door in his face, as she broke off contact with her father years ago because inventing obscure board games was always more important to him than his own daughter . However, she fears that her father will eventually die and that they still won't speak to each other again. Barney, on the other hand, is afraid of a slap from Marshall. After Lily and her father have reconciled, a friendly argument breaks out between Robin, Ted, Lily, their father and Marshall about who can slap Barney.

An old friend of Ted's is single again and since she is only for a very short time, Ted would like to take his chance as long as the "window is open". He leaves the woman in the care of his friends, who are supposed to make sure that she doesn't get to know anyone while Ted is away. However, she does get to know someone, and as you can see, she will never part with this man again.

Ted's children are shocked to learn that their father once smoked. But not only he, Robin, Lily, Barney and Marshall also take a cigarette every now and then. On the roof of Ted and Robin's apartment, among other things, they talk about what they would do with their younger selves if they could revisit the moment they started smoking. At the end of the episode everyone smokes their “last” cigarette, although old Ted mentions that despite good resolutions, it wasn't really the last for anyone.

In the end, she ends the relationship with Ted, because he only sees things in her room as a sign of a mutual bond that belong to her roommate. Barney lies to the bartender that he chose her and that he can seduce her.

Eventually she learns that Jenkins is not a plump older man, as assumed, but a young, extremely attractive woman who has also had an eye on Marshall. Robin, on the other hand, is very happy that her show is apparently becoming more and more popular as she is recognized again and again by Ted's students. However, she learns that you only watch her show to include her in a drinking game. This annoys her so much that she sabotages the game.

Ted is "on the hook" of a woman who just holds him up and takes advantage. It turns out that Ted also has a woman hooked. Barney got a mini pig to bait women. When she tells Scooter the truth, Marshall feels sorry for her again. Ted realizes he's hanging on the hook and breaks away from the woman. He also tells the woman he is holding out that they have no future.

Barney meets a woman who is the author of a book who believes that no woman should have sex with a man until her 17th date. Barney resolves to break her resolutions. As it turns out, Robin's wife was put on Barney because she can't stand his behavior since their separation. Barney finally realizes that he has behaved wrongly, apologizes to Robin and leaves her and Don with the super date he had planned to get the woman to bed after an evening. He also promises Robin not to sleep with the woman, which leads her to make Barney increasingly tempting offers. He still does not give in.

So she apologizes to Ted. A year later, Robin manages to take a picture of Barney looking bad.

Marshall's wallet is gone. At first he claims to have been robbed at the zoo. When Lily wants to get a gun out of fear, Marshall agrees that he had not been mugged - a monkey from the zoo stole his wallet. When he is laughed at for this, he again claims to have been robbed. Barney was so touched at Ted's mother's wedding that he cried, but claims that Robin cried until she had enough and told the truth.

Don gets to know Robin's friends and cannot understand that she is friends with two of her exes. Lily and Marshall get single beds because they can sleep better in them. When Barney sees Robin with Don, he thinks he wants Robin back, and Ted wants Robin back too. Ted and Barney get drunk together, fight and finally stand in front of Robin's house together to win her back. Robin decides to move in with Don and to distance himself from the group for him. Lily and Marshall notice that a bed together is better. Without saying goodbye, Robin moves out of Ted's house and leaves the blue horn behind.

Barney has tickets for "robots versus wrestlers", but Robin wants to keep his distance and cancels. Ted bothers that his friends make fun of him whenever he talks about more serious subjects. He is all the more excited when the friends happen to end up at a party where there are people who share his interests and whom he admires. That's why he doesn't come to "Robots versus Wrestlers". Barney fears the group will break up. One of the wrestlers is Ted's doppelganger, which brings the group back together.

Robin is offered a job in another city, but declines because of Don. Then Don receives this offer, but unlike Robin accepts it and leaves her. Lily sees a man who only looks like Barney's doppelganger to her, which the others take as a sign that she is ready and she and Marshall decide to have a child.
