In 2030 Ted would like to tell his children in detail how he met their mothers. The story starts in 2005 when Marshall makes a marriage proposal to Lily, which she accepts. Ted also wants to finally find his future wife. At MacLaren's, he and Barney meet the newscaster Robin, whom Ted immediately falls for. They get along well and have a successful first date, which ends abruptly and without a kiss because Robin is called to a story. Ted wants to nail it and steals the blue horn for her from the restaurant where they had their first date. He makes his way to Robin's apartment. Ted confesses his love for Robin, which seems daunting to Robin. After Ted leaves, he ponders whether he missed the sign for the first kiss. Again in the future one learns that Robin is not the mother of the children.

After Robin's rejection, Ted decides not to see Robin again, but later he meets her in the bar while talking to Lily. He decides to have a party to get another date with Robin. After Robin did not show up at the first party, he celebrates a second and Robin does not show up at this either, which leads to a third party. At the third party, Robin and Ted decide to continue to be friends.

Finally she finds a flirt partner, but unfortunately it turns out that he is gay.

Robin has made guest list spots in the hippest club in town. Robin, Ted and Barney have an eventful evening ahead of them. Meanwhile, the relationship between Robin and her new boyfriend Mike fails due to Robin's bad behavior.

When Lily returns to her apartment three months later, she discovers that there is now a Chinese restaurant there. Without further ado, Ted invites her to live with him and Marshall. After Lily changes a lot, Ted changes his mind. A saber fight breaks out between Ted and Marshall, which ends abruptly when a saber pierces Lily. Robin isn't happy with Barney's idea that after five minutes on one date, Barney will know if he'd like a second. To prove Barney wrong, she goes on a date with a man who isn't actually her type. But against her will, the date ends in an emergency. Robin gets a call that Lily has had an accident and leaves the date.

On Thanksgiving , Robin and Ted decide to help distribute the food to the homeless. There they meet Barney. It turns out that Barney has been arrested for urinating in public and is doing community service. At Marshall's parents' house, after various remarks by Marshall's mother about being a mother, Lily flees to the nearest supermarket and buys a pregnancy test. Since there are no toilets there, she goes behind the house and is promptly arrested. In jail, it is revealed to Marshall and Lily that Lily is not pregnant.

Ted wakes up in the morning with a hangover next to a woman. Only through the stories of his friends does it become clear what happened the previous evening. At first everyone thinks the woman is Robin, whom Ted had phoned drunk several times, but she is a woman from the bar, Trudy. Robin then appears to speak to Ted about the nightly calls. To show Robin that he's over her, he wants to introduce her to Trudy, who has already disappeared.

To give his friends something special for New Year's Eve, Ted rents a stretch limousine . He plans to attend five parties with them within three hours. Between the different parties, the friends lose each other several times and meet a man they think is Moby . Shortly before midnight everyone finds each other again and Robin's new boyfriend shows up too, so that Ted doesn't have anyone to kiss and gets out of the car disappointed. Robin follows him and kisses him, because she had promised him.

Shortly after Ted learns that Robin has broken up with her boyfriend, he invites her to his friends Claudia and Stuart's wedding. A dispute breaks out between the future couple about whether Ted can bring a guest he has not reserved until they finally split up. After they have persuaded Stuart, Ted and Marshall go with him to the bar, where he gets along with Claudia again and, even after a few drinks, she agrees that Robin can come to the wedding. When Ted wants to pick up Robin on the evening of the wedding, she receives a call that she has to represent a newscaster, which she also accepts, so that Ted goes to the wedding alone.

At the same time Marshall wants to know from her where the cake at the wedding came from because it was so good. However, Claudia replies that there was no guest named Victoria at the wedding. Finally, Robin explains to him that she saw him and Victoria that evening and learned that Victoria works in a bakery and made the cake for the wedding. When Ted arrives at the bakery, they hug and kiss.

When Ted and Victoria arrive, Marshall and Lily hide in the bathroom so as not to disturb them. Meanwhile, Robin hangs out with Barney as his "bro", they go to a cigar bar and play laser tag . When Barney finally tries to seduce her, Robin gets angry and admits that she still has feelings for Ted.

When they meet, Marshall suggests that they try a game he has developed in which one has to reveal intimate things. While each of the friends one after the other tells his most embarrassing experience, Barney's story shows for the first time details about how he went from being a stupid hippie to being a seductive heartbreaker in a suit.

In addition, Marshall has to pay $ 4,000 for the suit and so decides to work with Barney to pay off his and Lily's debts. At the airport, Ted and Victoria decide to have a long-distance relationship.

Meanwhile, Ted is waiting for a call from his girlfriend. At the end of the episode, Robin calls him and asks if he would like to come to her.

Robin is supposed to receive an award for a journalistic work and invites her friends to this celebration. Ted and Robin want to make each other jealous. Barney says he hired a prostitute for Ted for the evening. Ted finds the woman nice to his surprise, but when he asks her about her job, it turns out that Barney had lied, which is why the woman reacts indignantly when Ted calls her a "whore".

The dating agency finds Ted's perfect dream woman. Meanwhile, Barney and Marshall, who is doing an internship at Barney's company, play a prank on a man named Butterfield, who then takes revenge. Lily calls Ted because she broke down. She wants to go to an interview for a scholarship. After Ted changes the tire, Lily drives away, leaving Ted in nowhere. Ted is picked up by Robin and driven back to New York. When he gets home, Ted realizes that his dream wife is Robin and doesn't go on his date. Lily decides against the scholarship.

Ted plans to be with Robin again. That's why he surprises her in her apartment with a string quartet with blue instruments. But they argue, and Robin tells Ted that she will go camping with her work colleague Sandy on the weekend. He wonders how he can prevent this excursion and wants an ex-girlfriend of Barney's to teach him a rain dance. Marshall learns that Lily has enrolled in an art school even though they are getting married soon. Ted tries to create precipitation on the roof by the rain dance. Finally it rains and he drives to Robin - they become a couple. When Ted comes home the next day, he sees Marshall sitting on the stairs of his house in the rain, Lily's engagement ring in hand.
