Marshall reports to a judicial committee on the trial of a chemical company represented by his former friend Brad. The reason for the hearing is initially unknown. Marshall can still win the case with Brad's involuntary help, but the fine for the corporation is well below the prosecution's claim. Thereupon Marshall decides to apply himself as a judge in order not to have to stand idly by such an injustice in the future. This also reveals the reason for the hearing. The rest of the gang, meanwhile, are vying to see who was more at odds with the law in their youth. Ted, Barney, and Robin then admit that their reports were grossly exaggerated. In the final scene, however, it is implied that Lily used to be really feared in her neighborhood.

After Barney has made it clear that he is no longer interested in Robin, it is precisely this inaccessibility that arouses Robin's interest in Barney. So she sneaks into Barney's apartment to confront him and Patrice with the playbook. The actions of the episode are linked by phone calls between Marshall, Lily, Robin and Ted, with each of the protagonists hiding in a closet or storage room. Lily, Robin and Ted are in Barney's apartment, while Marshall is hiding in his own apartment. The reason for this is the beginning of a sexual relationship between his mother Judy, who is visiting, and Lily's father Mickey.

At the beginning of the episode, Barney is "bewitched" by Marshall - which means that he is not allowed to speak a word until the ban is lifted. Marshall, Lily and Barney accompany him to his old campus. There, Marshall and Lily involuntarily run into a former classmate whom they feel harassed before and still. Robin also wants revenge: To Patrice for her liaison with Barney. The first part of the double episode ends with Ted, Marshall and Lily, as well as Robin, realize that with revenge campaigns you only keep yourself captive and that you have the key to free yourself from it. At college, Ted frees Barney from being bewitched, whereupon Barney bewitches Ted and tells him that he wants to propose marriage to Patrice on the roof of the WWN news channel. Ted has to promise not to tell any of his friends about it even after the ban is broken.

Lily and Marshall spend their first night without Marvin, who is taken care of by Lily's father Mickey. Out of concern for Marvin, almost all of their plans that they made for that night are destroyed, including the visit to the opening ceremony of the GNB building. However, this is overshadowed by the events of Ted, Robin and Barney: Ted wants to pick up Robin for the party, but then tells about Barney's engagement to Patrice. He convinces Robin to follow her heart and thus Barney, with which he finally releases her. On the roof of the news channel, Robin finds the last page of the playbook and learns that the events described from episode 166 (Splitsville) were staged by Barney and culminate in his marriage proposal to Robin, which she accepts.

In the end, it turns out that Robin and Barney's hired band cancels at the last minute and Ted meets Cindy again on the subway. He tells her about it and she arranges her former roommate, the mother, who then plays with her band at the wedding.

Ted meets with a 20-year-old woman. Now that Barney is engaged to Robin, he urges Ted to sleep with her. After Ted finds out she's also a Star Wars fan, he eventually does. Robin struggles with the fact that she has apparently not been noticed by other men since her engagement. She finally comes to terms with Marshall and Lily's help. Marshall successfully tries to please Lily with a leather bracelet made by Ted. Unfortunately, he is allergic to it. In the end, it turns out that the 20-year-old woman is Barney's half-sister and Barney wants the two of them to marry, otherwise it would just be a one-night stand.

Barney discovers the lost episode of the television show "Underneath the Tunes" starring Robin Sparkles. There it is stated that Robin ended her music career because she developed an obsession for an initially unnamed man. Ted has a brief encounter with a woman on the subway and then tries to track her down. Marshall and Lily dissuade him by arguing that fate must do the job. In fact, luck seems to bring Ted back together with the woman (Jeanette). The two start a relationship. However, it quickly turns out that Jeanette has actually been chasing Ted for a long time.

After Ted informs the group that he broke up with his crazy friend Jeannette, he instructs Marshall and Barney not to let them into his apartment while he is away. Ted admits that he never officially broke up with Jeannette and the group accepts their relationship and comes to the conclusion that their crazy behavior is a reflection of Ted's current emotional state. Meanwhile, Robin admits to future Lily in a series of flashovers that she used to be afraid to hold little Marvin and allowed Mike Tyson to take him. In the present, Robin stops Marvin for the first time and finds a bond with him.

Ted receives a message from the "Captain" on his answering machine. Ted saw the captain for the last time over a year ago at an art exhibition, together with Robin and Lily, and now believes that he is calling Becky about Ted's then short-term friend. When Ted tells Robin about it, Robin tells him that Ted couldn't know the real story because he was "high". However, Robin doesn't tell the correct story either, as it later turns out, because Robin was drunk at the time. In the end, only Lily tells the correct story and it becomes clear that the captain called about a painting that Lily discovered and that the captain was able to sell for a lot of money. The captain turns Lily an offer as an art consultant, which she accepts.

Since Barney and Robin want to get married soon and Robin does not want to settle down with him due to numerous one night stands in Barney's apartment, she tries to sell them. Ultimately, Robin decides not to sell the apartment because she doesn't want Barney to change or he'll be different from the one she fell in love with. Lily cancels the mission for the captain and now spends more time with Marshall.

Barney tries to convince Ted that the event “Robots vs. Wrestlers: Legends, ”but Ted doesn't want to get up early the next day. As they argue, various future versions of the two pop up at MacLaren's, supporting Barney's and Ted's side, respectively. Meanwhile, some more events happen at MacLaren's, some of which are very surprising. Ted finally realizes that he is alone in the bar and has only imagined the whole thing.

In 2030, Ted tells his children that there are only 45 days between that night in the bar and the day he met their mother.

Lily receives an offer from the captain to go to Rome, Italy for a year. She refuses at first, fearing that Marshall wouldn't want that because of his good job. But when it turns out that Marshall's company hasn't received any real contracts for some time, things change. Meanwhile, Ted is sitting with Barney at MacLaren's and has taken a look at Barney and Robin's wedding planner. She goes to a yoga class with him and, according to Ted, has a great body. However, she wears a coat, so Ted and Barney bribe the bar owner, Carl, to turn up the heat. In the end, Marshall and Lily decide, after going back and forth, to go to Italy.

Ted and Marshall plan a bachelorette party for Barney while Robin meets with Barney's mother. Robin has a terrible evening, as does Barney, where everything goes wrong. After Robin finds out, disappointed at the end of both meetings, that the stripper Ted and Marshall ordered is Quinn, she throws away her engagement ring and leaves. But in the end it becomes clear that the friends planned this cruel day, and with it every step, to make the bachelorette party unforgettable for Barney.

As the friends prepare to go to Barney and Robin's wedding, Ted shows Lily the renovations he's done to his Westchester home. She finds out that he wants to sell the house and move to Chicago immediately after the wedding. Meanwhile, Robin's and Barney's night of relaxation is nearly ruined by a hideous couple, and Marshall visits his family in Minnesota with baby Marvin. There he learns that he could work as a judge in the future, but only if he does not go to Rome with Lily. At the end of the episode, the eponymous mother's face is revealed for the first time when she is also on her way to the wedding.
