Ted is very happy about his new relationship with Robin, while Marshall is in mourning over his breakup with Lily. On the Internet he learns that Lily's credit card was recently used to pay for a room in New York. Ted tries to prevent Marshall from going to the hotel, but he does so and hits the man who opens the door of Lilly's room. Eventually they learn that the credit card was stolen and that Lily is not in New York. After many attempts to cheer up, Marshall is slowly getting better.

Convinced that Marshall is over Lily, Barney tries to help him meet new women in the bar. Marshall even has several successes; but every time, just before he can land on a woman, Barney snaps her from under his nose. Meanwhile, Lily has returned from San Francisco and is looking for an apartment with Robin. After some glossing over, she confesses that it was a mistake to leave New York. Marshall meets her and when Lily asks if they can get back together, they decide that they want to take it easy for now.

Ted's parents come to visit. He learns that they have long been separated. Lily and Marshall have sex, but beyond that they don't get along. Ted's parents split up because they were too different for Ted and Robin to recognize each other as a couple.

Because Lily can't find a real apartment, she lives with Barney. With his conquests mistaking Lily for Barney's wife, Barney takes pleasure in her presence in the apartment, seeing her as the ultimate weapon against his bedtime stories. When Lily makes more and more changes to the apartment and Barney realizes that he is in some kind of relationship with her, he throws her out, but she is allowed to take everything she brought into the apartment. Marshall spends a lot of time with Brad, who is also single, until they almost seem like a couple. But then Brad gets along with his girlfriend again.

Ted offers Lily a job as a secretary in his company. However, when she notices that her boss is very rude, she tries to educate him. Ted doesn't think it's a good idea and fires her. When the current construction project is rejected, Ted shows his personal design, which is well received. Lily starts teaching in kindergarten again. Meanwhile, Marshall has problems with his strict law professor. To help him, Barney tries to seduce her as he sees it as his job to seduce a cougar . However, it turns out that he cannot satisfy her and is sexually inferior to her. In the end, he breaks his hips, but Marshall still gets a good grade.

Marshall meets the young woman Chloe. Ted and Barney think this is insane, which seems to be confirmed as she becomes increasingly paranoid. This is justified, however, because Lily pursues her out of jealousy. Eventually Marshall decides against Chloe, and he and Lily become a couple again. Due to a mix-up, Barney gets the name Swarley, which he can't get rid of. Especially Ted spreads this name to annoy Barney.

Marshall and Lily get back together. A short time later they decide to get married in Atlantic City. There they can get married after a few hurdles, but realize that they want a real wedding. As it turns out, knowing a lot of people in Atlantic City, Barney had a gambling problem and was there regularly before.

Marshall and Barney want to find out why Robin doesn't like the mall and bet three slaps. Barney seems to have won and he slaps Marshall three times. In the end, however, one learns through a video that Robin was a pop star in Canada at the age of 16, and that she had to perform in malls for a year under the stage name "Robin Sparkles". Since Barney slapped Marshall unjustifiably, Marshall is now allowed to do so five times at a time of his choosing.

During the winter, Ted and Robin, Marshall and Lily fall into a coma as a couple and never leave the house, which is why Barney is often excluded. But then he gets a visit from his gay, dark-skinned brother James. Barney is overjoyed that James has the same lifestyle, but when James starts acting weird, Barney finds out that James is engaged. Barney initially opposes the connection, but when he learns that James is about to adopt a baby and that he will become an uncle, he is so excited that he even becomes the best man at James' wedding.

Christmas Eve is just around the corner, and Lily is decorating the apartment for it. But then it comes to an argument between her and Ted, who had verbally abused her while she was separated from Marshall. Lily is offended, takes off all the jewelry and brings it back to her apartment. Ted is very upset about this because, in his opinion, it is sabotaging Christmas. Meanwhile, Barney gets sick, but tries to ignore it. It turns out that Ted is also mad at Lily for never apologizing to him for leaving. Ted drives to his religious cousin until Lily follows him and they make up.

Robin picks up her younger sister Katie from the airport. When Katie admits that she wants to sleep with her boyfriend, Robin is shocked. Robin's friends try to get Katie to wait. In doing so, they unpack the stories of their first time. In the end, Katie's boyfriend breaks up with her because she wants to wait because of the stories.

Ted is promoted to chief architect in his job and has to deal with his former boss. He tries to fire him, but first feels sorry for him until it becomes too much. Thereupon Barney also wants to be painted by Lily, for which Lily demands so much money that she can pay for her honeymoon from it, but when she paints Barney, she leaves out a crucial detail.

The superbowl is coming up. But because of the funeral of the bartender Mark, no one can see the game. Later, everyone tries not to know the score until they have time to see the recording. This turns out to be extremely difficult. At the end of the day, everyone knows the result beforehand, but still enjoys watching the game together.

Ted missed the flight for an interview. In retrospect, he wonders why he was late at the airport. Ted picked up a penny, for the value of which he went out to dinner with Robin, where they discovered a bridal shop. Lily and Robin camped in front of it and the next day Robin shocked Marshall in the apartment. This injured himself and could not participate in the planned marathon, which Barney took over for him. He was in such pain afterwards that he couldn't get off the subway, so Ted jumped over the turnstile to help him, resulting in a hearing that Ted missed his flight. In retrospect, that turns out to be good, as the position would have required a move.

Ted and Robin talk about their exes, and it turns out that everything Ted owns comes from his exes. Robin demands that he get rid of everything, but then he discovers that Robin's dogs are all gifts from her ex-boyfriends. Lily invites the friends to a play, in which she acts. Barney thinks this is terrible and says it would be unreasonable to ask that he have to look at the piece in full. Lily, who says that good friends should do something like that, whereupon Barney forces the friends to watch an hour long one-man play with him until Marshall slaps him. Robin ends up getting rid of their dogs, but Ted doesn't. They argue, but in the end they decide to move into Robin's apartment together.

Marshall's Fiero breaks shortly before the 200,000 mile driven. In the workshop, the friends reflect on the shared experiences they associate with the car. In the end, Marshall says goodbye to the car and thus to a certain period of his life.

Ted and Robin want to move in together. Barney steals the moving truck and dumps it behind the bar to enjoy his conquests there. Lily and Marshall are initially happy to have the apartment to themselves, but they quickly realize how much they miss Ted. Ted and Robin realize that they and their habits are too different and so Ted moves back in with Lily and Marshall.

Barney plans a bachelorette party with a stripper for Marshall against his will. Lily's party, on the other hand, is very quiet with her relatives, most of whom, however, are already senior. Robin, who got Lily a spicy present, tries to prevent her from opening it, but in the end even Lily's grandmother is more amused than shocked. Marshall is angry with Barney about the stripper and says he cannot become the best man because he would only sabotage the wedding. Lily then tells how Barney was with her during her breakup with Marshall and convinced her to go back to Marshall. Barney and Ted then become witnesses.

Lily and Marshall decide to get some distance from each other before the wedding. Lily needs to gain weight to fit into her wedding dress. Barney participates in the show "The Price is Hot" because his mother once told him that the presenter Bob Barker was his father. Lily and Marshall can't stand being apart and meet secretly. Barney wins the show, but realizes that it's not his father and gives his winnings to Lilly and Marshall as wedding gifts.

Lily and Marshal's wedding is coming up and everything goes wrong. Lily's ex-boyfriend shows up, the heavily pregnant harpist goes into labor, Marshall shaves his head after his hair has been dyed blonde, and Lily freaks out. Lily and Marshall meet outside to relax and eventually decide to just marry close friends in the countryside and are married by Barney. Later they repeat that at the official celebration, where everything goes wrong, but it doesn't bother them anymore.

Lily and Marshall's wedding is over and everyone is at the party. The bride and groom are so busy with the guests that they can't get to eat anything. Ted and Robin want to say something to everyone after the wedding that Barney overhears. He pushes until the two tell what's going on. At first everyone thinks Robin is pregnant. But both tell of a conversation that they had had weeks before. In doing so, they discovered that they have completely different goals and ideas about the future, which is why they then broke up, they just didn't want to tell this so as not to disturb the wedding.
