Howard O'Neal Carter (born October 26, 1961 in Baton Rouge ) is a retired American- French basketball player .

career

The 1.95 meter tall winger scored a total of 1942 points for the college team of Louisiana State University (LSU) between 1979 and 1983. With this value, at the time of his departure from college, he was third behind Pete Maravich and Rudy Macklin on the eternal LSU basket hunter list. One of his teammates at the university was Derrick Taylor .

The rights to Carter went to the Denver Nuggets in the 1983 NBA draft , who selected him 15th in the first round. For Denver he played 55 NBA games in the 1983/84 season, in which he scored an average of 6.2 points. In early August 1984, Carter was transferred to the Dallas Mavericks . In the colors of the Texans, he was used eleven times by mid-December 1984 and then removed from the squad.

In 1985, Carter accepted a foreign offer from the French first division club EB Orthez and made a significant contribution to the fact that the team coached by George Fisher was French champions in 1986 and 1987. In the 1985/86 season Carter scored 21.9 points and in 1986/87 23.6 points per encounter. In the 1987 European Cup, Carter and Orthez only narrowly failed to make it into the final, they finished third in the semi-finals. He played in Orthez until 1989. Carter had to sit out due to an Achilles tendon, in the 1990/91 game year he was then under contract with the second division side Châlons. At the end of February 1992 he returned to Orthez and won the French championship for a third time with the team.

The winger took citizenship of the country during his time in France and was appointed to the national team.

In April 1995, Carter was arrested in Le Havre for drug possession after he had previously become suspicious of similar incidents. In the 1995/96 season he played in France's first division for Montpellier, 1997/98 in Greece at Iraklio OAA BC Carter's son Cameron Carter-Vickers , born in 1997, became a professional footballer.
