Life

Howland Chamberlain moved from his native New York to California in the 1930s. While working as an actor in a Federal Theater Project , he met his future wife, Leona. The young Chamberlain soon became a member of the ambitious theater group at the Pasadena Playhouse . He made his film debut in 1946 in the side of Myrna Loy and Fredric March in William Wyler's film drama The Best Years of Our Lives , which was awarded a total of seven Oscars . In the following years he played as a supporting actor often nervous characters in film noirs , but he was also seen in comedies. In 1952 Chamberlain played a hotel receptionist in the western classic Twelve Noon, who made nasty hints to Grace Kelly about her film husband Will Kane ( Gary Cooper ).

For 27 years, twelve noon remained Chamberlain's last film, as it was indicted by the Un-American Activities Committee as a suspected communist. As a result, there were no film roles for Chamberlain in Hollywood. Therefore, the actor moved back to New York with his family, where he worked for many years as a stage actor on Broadway , among others . After 22 years without a film appearance, he took on a role in the television strip A Touch of the Poet in 1974 . In the following years Chamberlain got some film and television roles again, for example as judge Atkins in the film Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) directed by Robert Benton . The film, which stars Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman , received five Academy Awards. Chamberlain worked as an actor until his death. He died of heart problems a month after his 73rd birthday in California.
