features

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya plicata is an epiphytic , climbing plant. Adhesive roots are formed on the nodes and also slightly below the nodes. The shoots are flexible and measure 3 to 5 mm in diameter. The internodes are 5 to 20 cm long. The fleshy, smooth leaf blades are slightly convex and thick. They are lanceolate (elliptical) with a pointed base and a pointed apex. They are (5) 8 to 15 (20) cm long and (2) 3.5 to 5 cm long. They are light green with pinnate-shaped leaf veins . The midrib is distinct on the underside of the leaf blade near the leaf base, otherwise slightly deepened. The secondary leaf nerve is often visible. At the base are one or two triangular (sap) glands approx. 0.5 mm long. The petiole is rutted on the upper side, (5) 10-20 cm long, and about 3 mm in diameter.

Generative characteristics

The flat or only slightly arched, umbel-shaped inflorescences consist of up to 30 flowers. The inflorescence stalks are curved downwards (positive geotropic), 5 to 10 cm long, and have a diameter of 2 to 3 mm. The perennial part of the peduncle is up to 2 cm long. The flower stalks are one to 3.5 cm long, the length increases from the center to the periphery of the umbel; the outer flower stalks are curved inward. The diameter of the flower stalks is about 1 mm. The five-fold, zygomorphic flowers are hermaphroditic and have a double flower envelope. The pink-colored corolla with rolled edges has a diameter of 7 to 8 mm (or 10 to 13 mm if the petals are spread out flat). The petals are fused about halfway ( sympetalie ). The triangular corolla lobes with a pointed apex are curved outwards. They measure 4 to 5 mm in length and 3 to 4.5 mm in width. They are downy hairy on the inside, approximately to the radius of the secondary crown, the apex is glabrous. The pink or yellow staminale secondary crown has a diameter of 5 to 6 (7) mm and is 2 to 3.7 mm high. The tips of the secondary crown are egg-shaped and flattened on top. They are 3 to 4 mm long and 1.3 to 2 mm wide. The inner process stands upright and reaches the height of the stamens. The outer process ends in two lobes (bilobat). The elongated Pollinia stand upright are 370 to 550 μm long and 160 to 210 μm wide. The caudiculae are broadly spatulate and broadly winged. The retinaculum is elongated, measuring 170 to 220 μm in length and 90 to 130 μm in width.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Hoya plicata is only found on the Malay Peninsula . It grows there in the lower zone of the tropical mountain forests between 500 and 1400 m above sea level.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1908 by George King and James Sykes Gamble . The type material is from Perak, Maxwell's Hill from 3000 ft. (Approx. 1000 m above sea level) and was designed by Benedetto Scortechini collected. Rodda et al. (2013) determined the specimen Scortechini 323 in the herbarium in Herbarium, Library, Art & Archives, Kew Royal Botanic Gardens (Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3AB) to be the lectotype.
